You become what you think about
Many through the ages have agreed that you become what you think about. From Lao Tzu to Earl Nightingale. It is a common theme through all philosophy and self help teachings.
Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “You become what you think about all day long.”
Napoleon Hill said, “You become what you think about most of the time.”
You Become What You Think About – Dr Wayne W. Dyer
This maxim is found everywhere. It caused me to ask the question, “What is Thinking exactly?”
Thinking is no more or less an organ of perception than the eye or ear. Just as the eye perceives colours and the ear sounds so thinking perceives ideas. Rudolph Steiner
This resonated with me and it occurred to my mind that a thought is the result of the thinking process, the thinking process is activated by an idea.
To borrow from Bob Proctor’s ‘You were born rich’ , we are a threefold existence consisting of a Spirit, Intellect and Physical aspect.
An idea can occur to us in one of three ways therefore:
1. An original idea that arrives from the unseen/electrical/spiritual realms as an influence, is perceived by the thinking process and enclosed/encapsulated/embodied in a thought.
2. An idea could be new to us, one received from reading a book or talking to another person.
3. It could arrive in us from an idea already made manifest in the world in the form of a new design of car, computer, sports game, film an so on. For all of these things are ideas manifested into form. Ideas which started a thinking process in the mind of an individual or group of individuals perhaps.
It is interesting how we use language, perhaps unconsciously, and how by considering certain phrases it can give insights into the way things work. Things like, “Oh, that gives me an idea…” or “You get the idea?” and “What do you think about that idea?”
When it said that you become what you think about it should also be born in mind that ‘Any thought had without a confirming act is a sterile thought.’ If you are thinking of starting a new venture of any kind it is necessary to take action. Even if you don’t know what you are doing at first. You will hear this a lot for example, in internet marketing, “Take Massive Action.”
Watch your thoughts; they become words. Watch your words; they become actions. Watch your actions; they become habit. Watch your habits; they become character. Watch your character; it becomes your destiny. Lao Tzu
Robert Collier said, “You can do anything you think you can. This knowledge is literally the gift of the gods, for through it you can solve every human problem. It should make of you an incurable optimist. It is the open door to unlimited possibilities.”
Whether you think you can or think you can’t – you’re right.
It has been said many times that success starts in the mind. Many have said that to have a successful business it is necessary to spend 80% of the time working on your self and 20% of the time working on your business.
Eleanor Roosevelt’s quote gives a good clue about where to come from to be most effective in working on our self. She said, “Great minds discuss ideas, average minds discuss events, small minds discuss people.” I am sure that we all have one of each of these minds. What this highlights is where the weight of our attention is best placed to serve our purposes.
There is nothing more powerful than an idea whose time has come. Victor Hugo
This by Andrew Carnegie, ” Any idea that is held in the mind, whether it is feared or revered, will begin at once to clothe itself in the most convenient and appropriate form available.”
You become what you think about
Is a wisdom to keep close. A question worth asking is,”If you become what you think about – Have I become what I thought about?” If we don’t have what we want, it’s going to be necessary to change what we are to get it. This starts with the ideas that we hold in our mind and how we think about those ideas.
We don’t get what we want in life. We get what we are. Les Brown
