Your Past Doesn’t Equal Your Future

On the one hand the statement your past doesn’t equal your future may seem like a pretty obvious thing to say.
However in the terms of personal development, in which Tony Robbins and others, have used it, it is referring to the aggregate mental conditioning present in us all.
One thing that causes people to get the same or similar results today as they got yesterday is the replaying in the mind images and feelings of past events. The repetition of these events is an instruction to the subconscious to set up the same condition that existed at the time which it obligingly does. This is like tuning a television set to a certain channel. You are only going to see what is on that channel.

It is important to realize that all past actions only exist in the mind. They are simply not happening now. Now is brand new.
Yes they are in the memory and can be recalled, but that can be a chosen response. It does not have to be an habitual occurrence which we become subject to.
It is a matter of choice. Any unfortunate, negative events which prevent moving forward should be forgiven. Which means letting go of completely. Any good, positives can be reinforced to power the current state and enhance present endeavours.

Every day is a clean slate and it is up to us what we choose to write on it.
Why do you do what you do? Is a study that can be like peeling all the layers of an onion. There are answers at one level which are true and then answers at deeper levels which are also true. All together forming what Bob Proctor calls the unconscious paradigm. A paradigm being a collection of habits which dictate behaviour and results.
If you ask someone why they do a particular thing a certain way the answer often is ‘I’ve always done it like this’ or ‘Everyone does it like this’. Habits can be passed on from one person to another. I heard a story to illustrate this which was to do with a lady cooking a ham. She would cut off the ends of the joint before putting it in the pot. Her child asked why she did that. The answer was that was how her mother did it. The child asked the grandmother why and got the same answer. The child then asked the great grandmother ‘Why did you cut the ends off of the joint before cooking it?’ The great grandmother said.’Well at that time we only had a small cooking pot and the whole joint would not fit’.
The point about this is how much of what we do is based in unfortunate or unconscious adopted habits when we could do things differently and get better results?
If you want it to be true that your past doesn’t equal your future because of the results you are getting it is going to be necessary to change what is in your mind. To set up new productive habits that are towards what you want and to change old habits which prevent.
