The Tough Topic of Euthanasia

Just as I was about to go to bed the other night I went to turn the T.V. off…
Right as I went to turn it off something caught my attention…
A documentary had just started and I didn’t know what it was about.
The man on the documentary began to talk…
With eerie music playing in the background, the man introduced himself as Terry Pratchett, a fantasy writer.
He went on to explain that he has recently been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and then says that in these modern times he would like to explore to possibility of assisted dying- Euthanasia…

Right out nowhere I am hearing something that nobody talks about and I was totally drawn in – even though I was ready for bed!

I have always been interested in the topic of Euthanasia.
Even in high-school I did an assignment on it that I actually chose to do…
(I didn’t really like doing too much in high-school!)
I found this documentary to be excellent…It was titled “Terry Pratchett: Choosing To Die”

Terry Pratchett wasn’t necessarily doing the documentary to be pro Euthanasia or against Euthanasia…

The Euthanasia Argument

Having watched the documentary, Terry Pratchett raises many good points…
He says many people are against Euthanasia for many reasons,
For religious, moral and just practical reasons.
Would Euthanasia cause deaths on a massive scale?
How can it genuinely be controlled and not abused?

On the otherside of the argument is just as big…
Who are we to tell someone what to do with their life?If someone is suffering with a terrible illness such as motor nueron disease how can we say that it is wrong for them to choose not to suffer…
People everywhere do this for their animals all the time, we may not want to do it of course but we do it so they don’t have to suffer.

I think both arguemts are good ones.

Euthanasia Documentary

I would cetainly recommend giving this a watch…
Some parts were a little tough to watch but ultimately i’m glad I watched it.

The part at the end was very emotional for me.
Although it was very sad at the same time it seemed kind of a happy moment…
Instead of this man slowly loosing function of his body he died holding hands with his wife…

Overall, I myself feel that I am for Euthanasia.
Now I don’t know if I could ever do it, or would want to do it…
I have no right to tell someone who has a terrible disease that it is wrong to consider Euthanasia…
Saying that though, I would only want to see it used in this way – never for someone who is depressed or someone who can be helped through a Doctor/Psychologist.
