Do You Have a Social Media Addiction?

Social Media Addiction & the 21st Century

We, as human beings, think that through social networks, we’ve somehow become more social creatures.

Social media has perhaps been the biggest change human interaction for centuries.
So this also means that social media addiction is a relatively new concept to us too.

Some of our closest primate relatives often have groups of somewhere between 20-50 members in a group at any present time.  If this group gets any larger, the group splits up into two smaller groups.  Humans are much the same, we generally can only maintain a close relationship with up to 15o people.  Yet with social media and social media addiction people become obsessed with the amount of “friends” they might have.

Social Media Addiction and Loneliness

Right now as I write this blog post, Facebook is the number two most visited website in the entire world.  That is some serious traffic every single day to Facebook alone.  You have other social media platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest in the top 50 most visited sites in the world and many others in the top 500 too!

With so much “social” interaction how can people be lonely… right?

Humans may be interacting through social media like never before yet lonliness is one of the most common ailments today, all coming down to us having a social media addiction.

Why Social Media Is So Successful:

  1. We can manage our social life most effectively.
  2. Have the ability to have more friends than we can manage.
  3. We have the ability to control what we say and choose the best pictures
  4. Present ourselves as who we want to be.

The Three Things of Social Media Addiction:

  1. Our attention is always were we want it to be.
  2. The idea that we will always be heard
  3. We will never be alone

Social Media Addiction – Take it Easy!

Now don’t get me wrong, I love social media but I think we all need to remember that everything is good in moderation.  It’s when we get to a point where instead of interacting with real people and only use social media to be “social” is a problem.

There are many great aspects of social media too, such as communicating with other like-minded people and using it for business too. Perhaps take a break for a few days and use it when you have something to say!
