An important thing to know if you want to lose fat is how to convert carbs into sugar. Everyone knows that sugar is bad for you. It causes cavities, makes you fat, and is a leading contributor to disease.
What makes sugar so hard to manage is that we’re not focusing on the big picture which includes all forms of sugar, fiber, and starch, i.e, carbohydrates (carbs).
Carbohydrates are organic compounds that contain single, double, or multiple sugar units. Simple sugars are only one or two sugar units long and are typically sweet tasting whereas complex carbohydrates are thousands of sugar units long and are fibrous in structure.
Sugar is also highly addictive which keeps us coming back for more. Once ingested, carbs convert to glucose (sugar) in the body so it’s important to know how much sugar and how to calculate it. This way you can cap your total sugar intake on a daily basis.
What I love about this approach is that it allows you to indulge your sweet tooth a little every day. You just have to keep portions very small. The main drawback is that sugary foods offer little nutritional value, loads you up with empty calories quickly, and leaves you wanting more sugary foods in a very short amount of time.
ALL Carbs Metabolize into Sugar. How do you calculate?
Consider carbs and sugar as the same thing. Because ALL carbs become blood glucose. Even “good” carbs metabolize into blood glucose (sugar), maybe not immediately like “bad” carbs from foods like starchy white bread, white rice, and sugary drinks – but the “good” carbs will also metabolize into sugar in about 40 minutes.
How much sugar? How many teaspoons’ equivalent? Easy: Divide by 4.
That is, divide the number of carbs you’re eating by 4, and that’s the number of teaspoons of sugar those carbs will metabolize into: in about 40 minutes if they’re “good” carbs, faster if they’re “bad” carbs…but it’s still the same divide-by-four.
Because 4 grams of carbs OR 4 grams of sugar = 1 teaspoon of sugar.
If (sneaky) food labels or recipes list only the # grams of carbs, take that number & divide by four. For example, a granola bar admitting to 24 grams carbs on its label — divide those 24 grams by 4. That granola bar contains the equivalent of 6 teaspoons of sugar!
As a fitness professional I love to help people get strong and healthy with information like this info about carbs for example. Sometimes all it takes is one small piece of information to make big changes. It’s great when you can see someone have what I call an “A-ha moment”. Knowledge is key, and if you actually implement what you learn then real change is inevitable.
The best part of my work that gives me a level 10 satisfaction is that I get to help people change their lives. When my clients tell me that they feel stronger, have better balance, can do things they couldn’t do – or haven’t done in a while, and when their clothes fit again, it gives me a great sense of accomplishment and I share in their joy and triumph. It’s my joy and triumph too!
The reason I am sharing this personal side of my life with you is because the Empower Network has changed my life in dramatic ways similar to how I impact my clients. The EN has given me the tools to do my job better. To be able to convey this information to more people. Helping more people connect the dots is what it’s all about.
