Please take a few minutes to see what our brilliant Vice President thinks about women and guns.
Today on my way home from work I heard the latest. Vice President Joe Biden has voiced his opinion on what a woman should do if she is afraid of would be attackers.
After serious consideration I decided to allow the video to speak for itself and instead I decided to talk about another life lesson that I learned while on vacation in Mexico. Barbie and I have been enjoying trips to Mexico for 14 years now. We found that when booking with Apple Vacations that we could get a all-inclusive trip for a very low price that would be more cost effective than building your own vacation. One of the determining factors was food and alcohol.
Breakfast being my favorite meal I would sometimes make two or more full trips to the buffet before calling it quits. We would then head to the the pool bar and drink for several hours, then eat a typical american lunch. Of course being in Mexico a siesta was a then in order. Afterwards we would wakeup go back to the bar for several hours and finish with a full dinner buffet.
Several years ago we both had an experience walking away after dinner and feeling so full and bloated that it was unpleasant. That feeling lasted for hours and the decision was made to be more responsible.
We have stuck with that over the years. I seldom go back to the buffet for more than one plate.
This year was markedly different, I was less glutenous than ever. Portion sizes were down. Drinking was mostly during the afternoon pool bar times and on four out of seven nights we chose to not go back out for dinner or drinks in the evening.
I have put on at least fifty pounds in the last 14 years and have been trying to find ways to loose weight. In fact this year I dedicated that I would loose fifty pounds.
What happened that turned on my light bulb was twofold. We went out for dinner on resort to a seafood specialty restaurant. Ordering appetizer, soup, and our entree. As the portions arrived I was shocked at how small everything was. Small appetizer, small bowl of soup and a small entree. I did not give this much thought till the following day.
I once again had my one plate of breakfast, afternoon drinks and a small lunch. Hours later I realized that the seafood tacos that I had enjoyed for lunch must have been bad and proceeded to be quite sick. One forgets how full a stomach can be until bringing all the food back up and out in rapid fashion.
That was it for me for awhile, no breakfast the following day, just Sprite. Lunch was a small soup and 1/4 of Barbies tuna sandwich with Sprite. Dinner was a large bowl of soup which I couldn’t finish and three bites of steak.
The next day it occurred to me that Americans as a rule are horrible at portion control. the portions we received at the specialty restaurant are more in line with the what you should eat to sustain yourself. Your stomach was never intended to hold and process the huge meals that we typically ingest. Even in my moderation I ate in excess.
This lead me to a weight loss idea! I decided to renew my weight loss goal and take it up a notch. Since the stomach is really quite small how about considering small portions rather than full plates. What if you ate a small jump start breakfast and several healthy bowls of soup per day with a lot of water to help keep you feeling full? What if you did this for several weeks and avoided alcohol intake? Give yourself at least one free day a week to keep from going insane!
We are back from Mexico and yesterday was day one! So far so good! We have both dedicated to a trial soup diet I will keep you posted as we proceed. I am marking my calendar to refocus and evaluate my progress weekly.
