Barbie's Game Plan For YOUR Success

Are You Impulsive Or Do you Institute A Period Of Waiting Before Making A Big Decision

Restored from the Empower Network archive (2011–2017), lightly edited to meet our current advertising standards. Views are the original author’s.

I had really nice folks come in today looking for a vehicle. The first thing that they told me was that they would not be buying a vehicle today. That they have a rule that they wait 24 hours before making a decision. My standard response to their defense mechanism is no problem lets see if we can find a vehicle that fits your needs.
So we are off and running. They proceeded to tell me that they wanted a four door, 4×4 truck and wanted to see what I have available. I took them to our newest aquisition  and they seemed to like it until they heard the price!
Goodness, you looked at our website before stopping in! Did you see any four door, trucks in that range? Well no! So back to the drawing board and once more out on the lot after a little reality talk we narrowed our search down to two choices.  A beautiful 2007 Toyota Tacoma with only 7,000 miles or a 2005 hummer H2 SUT with 79,000 miles.
Both were sure sweet and cool but when he saw the H2 He quickly fell in love. The features and the test drive cemented it and when we got back to the dealership I said “what a shame that you have the 24 hour rule.”  The wife said “nope, we won’t be doing that we will take it today.”
We sat down and went to work, doing all the steps properly to move towards their ownership experience. We agreed on on all but their trade value at which point she called her son-in-law to see what he thought about the trade value.
Well needless to say he had nothing good to say including that the decision to purchase the Hummer is a bad idea too! Why would you want to spend 1/2 the price of your home on a vehicle? Of course I didn’t hear anything that the son-in-law had to say just alot of um-humphs from the wife. But I heard it all once she got off the phone. Things were starting to go sideways! She told us all about the conversation then proceeded to say I think we should wait before making this decision.
My customer was anything but happy, He Wanted (his) Hummer and told his wife  just that. She once again stated “We should think about this”. He said ” are you against it or are you invoking the 24 hour rule?” She said “well, yes I am invoking the 24 hour rule”.
That was the end of that! He looked like the most forlorn person that you’ve ever seen but told me that they agreed on this rule 30 years ago and that they have lived by it throughout their marriage.

I was pleased to see tears in both their eyes as they left his Hummer at the dealership, She not wanting to ruin it for him and he not wanting to leave without it.
Yes I said I was pleased. I worked hard to put that deal together for some putz to ruin it.
But underneath that, I respect that they have ways of working together toward a common goal using common sense. I can’t guarantee that the Hummer will still be available tomorrow or that they will decide they want it after the waiting period. They just might choose to listen to their retarded son-in-law the deal spoiler.
But I know one thing! I treated them with respect and I expect our interaction will be long remembered.
Me, I am just hanging out planting today’s seeds waiting for the fruit to grow.
