Lifestyle Lesson From An Ex-Corporate Robot Mom

Thinking back… I remember the day…the moment…

that changed not only my life but would be the catalyst that would give us the lifestyle with choices.

PRESCOTT, ARIZONA 1998 – Corporate Robot Warning

It was 5:45 in the evening as I picked up our son from day care nearby my corporate job, as a mortgage loan manager for the local bank’s real estate lending department.  It was a stressful day just like so many of them were. 

The one thing that made me feel better, as I hated being away from him every day while I was at work, was when I picked up our son, he always had a big smile, gave me a hug and a huge screech of “HI MOM”!  He was 3 ½ years old and pretty smart little kid (course all parents say that about their kids, right?!) 

Pulling up to the stop light, I didn’t have the radio on that evening, and out of the blue our son asked me:

“Mom, when will we see Dad in the sun”

HUH?!  It hit me right in the heart…I didn’t even notice the light turned green until the car behind honked their horn.  As I started driving, in tears, I said, “Jason, I will talk to your dad, we will see him tomorrow for sure.”  He was all excited.

This kid DID know what was going on.  He could see how I worked days and my husband worked nights as a restaurant manager.  We really didn’t see him that much, because he didn’t come home until 3:00a.m. and I got up at 6:00a.m. to get ready, get breakfast for our son and get out the door to do it all over again…taking him to day care and getting to work on time.  That job required me to be at work from 8:00 to 5:00 and because of the nature of my position, I usually didn’t get out of there until 6pm.

Some evenings after picking up our son I would take him over to the restaurant to see his dad, and he was so excited to see him.  But it certainly wasn’t the way to live a ‘family life’. 

The Hard Lesson Was Learned

My husband and talked about it the next day and we decided that maybe being in Arizona when all our family was actually back in California really didn’t make much sense.  Plus, my husband was getting burned out as a night manager.  I also just learned that the bank I was working for was considering to be bought by a larger bank from back East.

Hint Hint….change your life!

It was the first smack in the face I got.  Our 3 ½ year old made such an impact on us and really got us thinking about how we were living life. 

I remember many days gazing out my office window wondering…. “Is this what life is all about?”

Were we suppose to live like this every day?  Doing the same thing, getting up at the same time, rushing to daycare, drop off our son, get to work, get stressed out from the job and then racing back to daycare to get home, make dinner and maybe, have a few hours family time to only have to get up the next day and do it all over again.  Living for the weekends in hopes to have more family time, that my husband could spend a couple hours with us!

It was then we decided it was time for a change….

We talked to a realtor in the next few weeks to list our home.  We planned a 4 day trip that I had to clear with my boss and of course my husband had to get someone to fill in for him while we took off for California.  We took some time to look for either a home to purchase or a lot to build a home. 

While driving around the area we were going to move to, it was the same area we had been living (Paso Robles, CA) for many years before I was hired with the Bank in Arizona.  We loved to be so close to the ocean, the schools were nearby and we talked about how our son will probably be playing soccer or baseball real soon.  There was joy in our plans and we just knew this was going to be the right move.

PASO ROBLES, California 2000  – The Big Move

It was hard for me to give my notice to leave a 6 year job with the bank in Arizona.  To leave what I thought was a ‘secure’ paycheck.  But I knew that being that corporate robot wasn’t for me.  And if we wanted to change our life, we really needed to make a change.

After a couple of weeks I got my California Real Estate license which is required even for loan officers as I was going to ‘hang my license’ with a broker.  I would be able to do transactions under the broker and get paid commissions.  It was the first time in my life that I didn’t have a ‘pay check’.

Well…I had a paycheck except I had to close transactions before I got paid and to know how much I would get paid.  The broker got a cut of each transaction I closed too.  Plus the first broker I worked for required I be in a cubicle in the office space he leased.  Even after telling him that I really wanted to work from home.  He wouldn’t have anything to do with that.

After about 1 year of working this way, once again I thought, I’m doing almost exactly what I was doing in Arizona.  Our son was now in school and there was an after school program called ‘LatchKey’.  Yup, our son was now a latchkey kid, and I didn’t like it one bit.

Fortunately, one of the other loan agents decided to get his broker’s license and asked if I wanted to work with him instead.  We cut a deal that I could work from home, YEA!  Part of the deal was that I would come into the office during hours our son was in school.  Finally! 

I was now a work from home mom, BUT….

Still it was a job, which meant I didn’t have the freedom lifestyle I would soon learn was a choice I could make.  

So this turned out to be the defining moment.  It was at this point where I was introduced to online marketing.  There is a lot more to this story, but I can tell you I didn’t blink, but instead wanted to know as much as I could about this online marketing thing.  I just felt there was a better way to have the life I wanted to live, instead of always doing what someone else said I had to do to make a living, I didn’t want a job!  

FAST FORWARD….

September 2012 it was a warm evening and a cool breeze coming in from the open windows of our home.  We had just finished dinner and after cleaning up I told my husband I wanted to do some things on the computer.  So I opened my computer…

AND THERE IT WAS…. the link!

I can’t remember who shared this link with me and most of the time I would just ignore clicking on anything if I didn’t know who the person was.  But something told me to click it.  The next 45 minutes would change my life!
