Do you Listen To Opinions or Wise Counsel?
How many times have you been excited by a potential business opportunity, a new challenge or project that you want to undertake and thought before I make a decision, I’ll go talk to (fill in the blank…) first?
It’s totally normal, in terms of human behavior to want to gather information, advice or just get some input from those we hold dear to us before committing ourselves to anything BUT is it really the best thing to do?
I guess that depends on whether we are truly looking for quality input, i.e. wise counsel or are we simply looking for someones opinion on the subject and are we clear on the difference?
Opinions v’s Wise Counsel
This morning we attended a live call, during which, the guest speaker Mr Greg Reid discussed several success principles but the one that really stuck out as being key to success in the business arena was, ‘Who Do You Listen Too?”
Click Play to see what one of our business colleagues has to share on how the difference between opinions & wise counsel can make or break your business…
Accepting or even listening to advice from other people can, very often define and shape our outcomes in life and for the most part it does so without us really being aware of this fact.
Every Suggestion Or Advice Has A Direct Influence – So Is It Wise Counsel?
I’d be willing to bet that many of you reading this will deny that the advice you receive actually has any impact unless you choose to act on it. But think about it for a second. Even if you never take the advice and act upon it, the influence is there nonetheless. It may cause you to hesitate, lose confidence in your plan, question your approach or maybe even dull your enthusiasm.
You may be totally committed. You’re determination, faith and personal discipline takes a bit of a hit when other peoples opinions, suggestions or advice is not consistent with your prior beliefs on the subject. Subtle as it may be, over time their lack of belief and enthusiasm for your endeavour could start to hold you back. You may even reach the point where you feel like a ship anchored to the spot. Just drifting in place as the world and your opportunity floats on by.
Leave The Anchor Behind
Let’s face it, if you make the mistake of seeking opinions rather than wise counsel from worthy individuals, the naysayers will have a big influence over your efforts if you take them serious and listen. So the best thing you can do is get as far away from them as you possibly can.
But the problem is with many of those who are giving you advice, are often your friends and family and whilst the advice they offer is not congruent with your ideas, they actually believe they are doing you a favor. In their minds, they are convinced they have your best interests at heart.
Here’s the danger, if you so much as hesitate about whether or not you should pay attention to what they are saying, and whether or not there is a genuine reason for doubt, don’t get caught up in it, just ask yourself this question:
- Is the person, providing the advice, living the lifestyle that I want to live, or at the very least are they headed in the right direction?
Or maybe even this one:
- Does this person have any credible experience in regard to the advice they are offering?
If you were looking to get your body into shape would you seek wise counsel from the guy in the photo to the left?
You wouldn’t would you.
Because it is clearly evident that he is probably not the most qualified to be offering any advice on body toning.
He may be a great financial adviser but a body expert – I don’t think so.
To put it bluntly. Wise counsel will never be found in discussions with anyone who does not have the necessary skills or experience consistent with your desired outcomes.
In other words, don’t seek marriage counselling from someone whose on their third marriage or similarly you don’t want to be taking financial advice from someone who is always broke and facing bankruptcy.
Bottom line is;
“Only ever take advice from someone who has already achieved what you are trying to achieve or can point to a level of success far greater than that you currently have.”
Don’t be one of the fools who fall for advice from people who are more messed up than we are.
So, don’t ever listen to other people’s opinions when making important decisions that could impact the rest of your life.
Instead, seek wise counsel from a qualified expert in your particular field of endeavor.
Unfortunately it is all too often true that most people who are having a hard time reaching success tend to be listening to opinions rather than wise counsel…
