If you love your technology and you’re into smartphones then you should be excited about the release of this one.

After much speculation, rumours and supposed leaks, Sony has formally come out and announced the latest Xperia Z Ultra, which they state is a cross between a smartphone and a tablet creating what is affectionately being referred to as a phablet. The new Xperia Z Ultra sports an impressive, crystal clear 6.4-inch screen.

The design is based on Sony’s OmniBalance approach staying true to the style of the Xperia Z and Xperia Tablet Z. Showcasing a slim profile thickness of only 6.5 mm with a total weight of 212 grams. The width of the phone is comparable to that of a Passport, claims Sony and is available in Black, White and Purple.

Xperia Z Ultra – Under The Hood

Powered by a 2.2 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, the Xperia Z Ultra comes equipped with 2GB of RAM. It has 16GB of inner storage which can be expanded to approximately 64GB using a microSD card.

With an impressive screen resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels, the Xperia Z Ultra is the very first smartphone screen to incorporate Sony’s Triluminos technology, which Sony presented at CES with its Bravia tvs.

Sony reports that through this technology the screen recreates a higher assortment of rich, organic shades delivering truer, more natural colours to the end user. The innovative technology additionally features X-Reality for mobile, Sony’s intelligent super resolution display technology which analyses each image and then reproduces missing pixels to optimize top quality producing the sharpest possible videos.

The phone has dual cameras;

• an 8-megapixel Exmor RS rear camera
• and a 2-megapixel front facing camera.

It has a 3000 mAh battery. The phone features 4G LTE, NFC, and Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity.

Much like the Xperia Z, the Xperia Z ultra is both dust and water proof and includes IP55 and IP58 accreditation. One of the coolest features is the ability to take pictures underwater.

I also like the fact that it has pretty cool handwriting recognition functionality. The screen will work with any stylus, pen, or pencil as long as it has a tip with a diameter over 1mm.

The Xperia Z Ultra also comes with the latest upgraded Sony Media Applications including brand-new apps for Walkman, Movies and Album.

The phone is expected to be released internationally in the latter part of 2013. Exact timing of availability will certainly differ depending on the market. Prices are still to be disclosed.
