Life Lessons From A Reluctant Student.

Restored from the Empower Network archive (2011–2017), lightly edited to meet our current advertising standards. Views are the original author’s.

I was never really a great fan of academia. I actually couldn’t wait to reach the voluntary leaving age and the main reason for that was I felt the subjects they were teaching me – I really couldn’t quite see how they would fit in with my future aspirations.

Fast forward to now and the reality is that a lot of what I learned in school has pretty much sat dorment in the back of my mind never to be called upon. Don’t get me wrong, the general Reading, Writing and Basic Math, have proven useful but hell I could have learned that within two to three years max.

Most of my real learning has come, not from the schooling I was forced to endure but more so from my daily dealings with real people in the real world.

There are so many important lessons I’ve learned since leaving school — way too many to list them all — but below are some of what I class as the most important “Life Lessons.”

Be Kind To Everyone. This is one of the greatest life lessons and it’s so easy to do. It might be a genuine smile to a stranger, giving someone a heartfelt compliment or as simple opening the door for a stranger.

The secret to being kind is to be genuine and not expecting anything in return.

Go out of your way to make someone’s day better. You’ll both benefit. It only takes one kind word or gesture to change someone’s entire day.

Kindness is the language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see. ~Mark Twain~

Go out and perform a random Act of Kindness today.

Practice Compassion. Compassion for others is the highest form of humanity and one of the first life lessons you should learn. Genuine compassion is the wish that all beings are free of suffering and pain.

In its essence compassion is our ability to enter into and, at least to some extent, share others’ suffering. This closeness and affection toward all beings is likened to the love that a mother has for her only child.

Have compassion for everyone, no matter how terrible their actions may seem. You don’t know their story.

And forgive them. Forgiveness doesn’t mean you’re saying that what was done to you was OK, but it does free you from the negative emotions that can and will create dis-ease within the mind-body-spirit.

Not forgiving someone will cause the pain and hurt to fester inside and tend to hold you back – you find yourself stuck in the past, unable to move forward with your life.

Your legacy is the way you make others feel and the impressions you leave them with. I encourage you to think about it because knowing how you want to be remembered helps you decide how to live and work today.

Here’s a couple of ideas to help you along the way.

  • Strive For Excellence in Everything You Do:- One person in pursuit of excellence raises the standards and behaviors of everyone around them.
  • Encourage Others:- You can lift others up or bring them down.  How would you prefer to be remembered by the people in your life, for the way you encouraged them in their pursuits or for the way you may have discouraged and stifled their dreams?
  • Live on Purpose:- Have a purpose behind what you do, make your life about something bigger than you. You know that you are not going to live forever in a physical sense but if you leave a positive impact on the world you can live forever through others.

Adversity Is Your Friend. This is a life lesson that needs a lot more attention in schools than it currently receives.

I could never understand why bad things happen to good people and for many years I refused to accept that there was any truth to the idea of a god because if he was for real – how could he/she allow such travesty in the world?

I was very young back then and luckily life has taught me many things since then. I’m not going to go into detail here because I could go on forever. Just know this, adversity helps you to grow and become a better person. Find the life lessons buried deep within the adversity and the suffering that usually follows. They are there.

Life Lessons – Never Easy But Always Worthy

Life has many lessons to teach us along the road to old age but each and every one of them is a gem well worth receiving. One thing I’ve learned is that patience is a good thing and I don’t just mean waiting quietly in the cue at your local supermarket. As each generation progress’s there appears to be a growing level of expectation and with it a diminishing regard for being patient.

What I’m talking about is the expectation of success without having put in the hard yards and being prepared to make the necessary sacrifices to earn that success. The idea of starting out small and building toward success seem to be overtaken by the desire for instant gratification.

In my experience it’s the ones who are willing to start small and build from a solid foundation that will fill their cups and harvest the fruits of their labor. Without patience, sacrifice and perseverance success will continue to allude many. We see it all the time in the Internet Marketing arena as people jump in and out of programs because they haven’t achieved their desired level of success within the first few weeks.

So another of the many life lessons to heed is;

Slow Down. I know it’s called the ‘Human Race’ but it’s not a real race you know. While you may feel the pressure to stay ahead of the pack because you have all these bills to pay, like the mortgage, car and utility payments.

What’s the point if you’re not taking the time to enjoy the process.  Are you making time for the things you really enjoy or are you too busy surviving to pursue your dreams?

Are you heading in the right direction, the direction you were created for? Have you drifted off-coarse and perhaps taken a wrong turn in your haste to get there? Are you doing what you do because you want to and you thoroughly enjoy it? Or would you rather be doing something else? Are you living an harmonious, peaceful life or do you feel deep down that you’ve missed something along the way? We often become so focused on the end result that we miss all the little miracles that happen along the way.

Nurture Great Relationships. The importance of friends is often underestimated particularly in the latter years. People move, we drift apart as interests change or we simply become busy. Whatever the reason, friends come and go so it’s important to occasionally conduct a friend audit to determine if the people you spend time with are ‘drains’ or ‘radiators’.

Radiators are those who lift you up and give you energy, they are a joy to be around and you’re excited to see them. Drains, on the other hand, are negative in their outlook and tend to bring you down.

Studies have shown that emotions are as contagious as diseases and sadness is way more infectious than happiness. I’m not suggesting that you should ditch any or all of your friends who are perhaps unhappy but you really do need to balance the books so to speak. Spend more time with positive friends and less with negatives.

Always Do Right. Do the very best you can in everything you do and always treat others as you wish to be treated.

As far as life lessons go I personally try to follow this one to the letter. Never ever do anything to somebody else that you would not want done to anyone you love or yourself.

Practice this and when faced with a situation that perhaps challenges your position helps you to shift from a reactive person to a responsive one. Instead of reacting to any given set of circumstances, when you live by this rule, you’ll find yourself taking a pause and considering your response more carefully with a view to always ensuring a positive outcome is achieved.

Gratitude. Be grateful. Not just for the big things in your life. Be grateful for everything.

“Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap but by the seeds you plant.” – Robert Louis Stevenson

This is the single most important of all the life lessons because I believe gratitude is the key to prosperity.

It’s impossible to feel sad or maintain any negative feelings when you are truly grateful. If you’re in the middle of a difficult situation, just look for something to be grateful for. When you find one thing, look for another, then another and still yet another, because for every single thing you find to be grateful for changes the situation. Gratitude provides the bridge from negative feelings to joyous positivity.

John Henry Jowett
Presbyterian Preacher – Author
(1864 – 1923)

“Gratitude is a vaccine, an antitoxin and an antiseptic.”
~John Henry Jowett~

Give particular thanks for the magnificence of your marvelous mind that no computer in the world can duplicate.

There is absolutely no shortage of things for which you can express genuine gratitude for on a daily basis.

To develop and use the power of gratitude in your life – practice it daily and soon you will feel the gratitude and so too will all those you come into contact with.

Gratitude will cost you nothing but is worth more than all the riches in the world because gratitude enriches you with all the abundance in life and whatever you are grateful for, multiplies.

True Life Lessons Never End

Are you excited about your life? Everyday poses it’s own opportunities for you to learn and grow or as Bob Proctor puts it – you have an opportunity to grow new brain cells – there’s more of you to love.

Life will never be perfect – but it can be a lot of fun if you just learn to never ever take yourself that seriously that you actually become boring. There is so much out there to learn and to do – new sights to take in, new places to visit, new people to meet and then when you feel like you’ve seen and done it all – start all over again.

Life lessons will jump out to greet you at the least expected moment and that’s a good thing because it keeps you grounded. It keeps you from becoming complacent with your life. Challenge yourself to actively seek out new life lessons and really take full advantage of every opportunity you can to grow and become the person you really want to be.

And with that said – I’ll leave you to ponder this thought
