How to Get More Facebook Likes — Increasing Your Presence

Okay, so this title may be a little deceiving.  I say this, because when it comes to your Facebook Fan Page, it really isn’t that important how many “likes” you have.  Yes, in the end we do want more likes and we want to be popular in our niche…but that isn’t what’s most important.  In order to grow on Facebook, you need to increase your presence.

10 Ways to Increase Your Facebook Presence

(and Get More Facebook Likes…)

  1. Segment smarter.  Facebook now gives you the ability to create lists for your family, friends, associates, topics, etc.  You can choose which list you want to show up in your news feed.  You can then focus your attention on updates that relate to what those in the list would be interested in or are already discussing.
  2. Focus on quality over quantity.  It is much better to have 2-3  strong updates that are engaging, than several that don’t hold much weight.  One way to you can make your updates stronger is by including a picture.  Pictures draw people in!  However, you do need to be careful about posting too many pictures, especially if you are using Instagram a lot.  Sometimes Facebook will put these pictures in a folder, and they won’t be seen.  Also, you want your updates to be “sticky.”  What does that mean?  Well, it means that you want your updates to be conversation starters.  You want to get people talking.
  3. Add photos.  Add  photos of yourself and friends/family to your Facebook  page.  Make photo albums.  When you friend someone on Facebook, I bet the first thing you do is look at their pictures.  People are doing the same to you.  If you only have a few pictures on your page, people can’t get to “know” you in the way that photos allow. This helps build relationships.
  4. Share.  Share other people’s content.  When you do this, make sure that you put in additional comments or your own insights.  Don’t just hit “share” and leave it at that.  Add value!
  5. Comment on other people’s pages.  Comment on the pages of those you follow, especially influential people with a large following.  Also, if someone comments on your page, reply back!  Interact with your followers.  There’s nothing worse than when someone comments or asks a question and never gets a response.  This can turn someone away.  Show your followers that you care!
  6. “Like” your face off!!  Basically, if someone posts something that you like, or want, or agree with…like it!  It shows that you are supportive of your peers.  People will return the favor.
  7. Interact.  Interact on your own posts.  Educate, inform, and entertain those who like your page.  Also, give recognition, thank-yous, and show appreciation of others.  It lets people know that it’s not all about you.
  8. Timing.  Feel free to do your own research on this subject, but basically the best times to post an update on Facebook is 11:00 AM, 3:00 PM, and 8:00 PM EST.  If you are building a following and branding yourself, it is best to focus on this in the mornings.  What’s the best day of the week to update?  Wednesdays.  It is also good to note that weekends are not the best times to update if you want to reach a large audience.
  9. Talk about current events.  You can talk about anything — fashion, sports, politics.  But be careful when discussing politics or something controversial.  You may need to play Switzerland, if you know what I mean.
  10. Call-to-action.  Tell people to visit your blog, or comment, or “like this if you agree.”  But be careful not to do it too often.  It can become very annoying.  Then, people will start blocking or hiding your status updates.  And that’s the complete opposite of what you want to happen.
