How do you Control your Emotions?

Restored from the Empower Network archive (2011–2017), lightly edited to meet our current advertising standards. Views are the original author’s.

This can’t be stressed anymore than it  already is. It’s very important that you learn to control your emotions. Why? Haven’t you realized by now that every time your emotions overpower your logic, you lose control and regret some stupid decision you end up making?

Seriously, if you learn how to control your emotions, you will attract business, relationships, and opportunities into your life with little or no effort at all. When you’re in a grumpy mood, nobody wants to be around you, right? When you’re happy, everyone seems to enjoy your company!

Don’t complicate this concept.

How do you Control your Emotions? – Observance

So how do you control your emotions? It’s already as simple as it will ever need to be. If you don’t have much experience with controlling your emotions then now is a great time to start. Whenever you see an emotion building up inside of you, ready to strike, observe how your body reacts to that specific emotion. The more and more you do this, the easier it is for you to identify which emotion correlates to which bodily reaction. And since everybody has a different way of responding to their emotions, it makes it even easier to identify what makes you tick.

It took me years to figure this out with myself but I started to notice that whenever I’m sad I tend to sweat, smell, and my stomach becomes upset. Since nobody likes to have bad body odor, especially when you’re around other people, I always force myself to change my attitude so that my reaction goes away quickly. Now maybe your reaction is not as bad as mine is or maybe it’s even worse. Recognize your reactions to your emotions and I guarantee you will have an easier time dealing with your emotions.

At the first response to an emotion, recognize that emotion.

Once you have identified which emotion your body is experiencing, it becomes a lot easier for you to counter it. Would it make any sense to listen to depressing music if you are sad? I mean, yeah it does resonate within us the same message we want to hear. Most of the time music even cries to our soul when our emotions overpower us. But the reality of opening up a wound that has just started to heal just doesn’t make sense.

Now don’t interpret what I’m saying the wrong way. I’m not saying you should ignore your emotions and push them aside. This actually becomes very dangerous when we bottle up our emotions. It’s never a good idea to suppress any emotion, especially if it’s a negative one. What I am saying is that in order for you to heal or get over your emotions, it’s more beneficial to counter the emotion with something positive. Negative emotions are horrible for you and will only continue to make a situation worse than it actually is. Don’t ever make a major decision when your emotions are in control because it will almost always be a decision that you will later regret. Negative emotions will also affect your health when you allow them to control you. Some people even contract diseases or die from them too. Ultimately, you can’t operate at your best when your health is in danger.

If you don’t learn how to master your emotions, then your emotions will master you instead.

How do you control your emotions without everyone noticing? From time to time, we will let our emotions get the best of us. I know I do all the time. But when it does happen to me, I remind myself that it’s a perfectly normal experience of being human. It’s perfectly okay to have negative emotions. This is what makes us sentient beings in the first place. However, don’t underestimate the power of your emotions. When you do recognize them, take the necessary steps so that you don’t allow them to take control over you.

How do you Control your Emotions?

#1 Recognize your body’s response to an emotion.

#2 Identify the Emotion.

#3 Take Positive Action to Counter your Emotion.

Is there any way to minimize the effects that emotions ruin in our lives? This is something that took me a very long time to understand and appreciate. I hope you don’t have to get sick or lose something you love in order for you to realize this either. Be thankful for what you have, not what you don’t have. Especially during emotional times, you must learn to appreciate the small things in life.

In my personal experience, I found that the easiest way to do this is to surrender your emotions to a higher power. Whether you believe in one or not, you cannot be alone when you are in times of struggling. You need help from somebody else and no matter how much we think we can manage our lives and that we are always in control, we’re only fooling ourselves because we’re really not. Negative emotions are indicators that something is wrong with ourselves, whether it’s physical, mental, or spiritual. Do not ignore these signs. They are present for a reason! This is your body’s way of telling you, “Do something different because what you’re doing now is not working.” Use these warnings as an opportunity to change yourself and live a better quality of life.
