Making Movies

Every year we film our annual event with the two choirs of Schwamendingen (the quarter I grew up).

And somebody has to make a movie/DVD out of it.

Last year (2012) a film maker in spe (Lia de Luca) filmed it. With my camera.

She moved around a lot with the camera. Even climbed a ladder to shoot. I would never have thought to do that!

My job was to cut it. Which I did on a Mac Air. Mostly because I get too distracted by other stuff on my iMac (you know, big screen, lots of windows open).

I had a lot of fun doing that because of the material I had. It was like I could tell a story.

I start with showing the day before with the decorating, and practise of the songs. I cut the songs together just showing a few minutes as a teaser and go back to Friday and saturday morning. Then Saturday, people arriving. Then finally the songs.

I figured out how to add “chaptures” which later on the DVD you can jump to the songs for instance if one of the singers wants to show a pertical song to a friend or wants to practise it.

At the end I was pretty happy with the result and showed it to the ladies on the macAir.

Challenges with making a movie

The challenge was to get it form the MacAir to the iMac to burn a DVD because Mac Air does not have a drive for CDs or DVDs.

Next challenge: my new iMac doesn’t have a CD or DVD drive either, luckily my girl-friend’s has one. It’s the same size as mine but the older version.

Generally I hate working on other people’s computers because their settings is different than to mine.

For instance, I have my track pad (new version of a mouse) set to tap. No more clicking, just tapping – love it!

Hers is set to clicking mostly due to her working with graphics and stuff and tapping reacts too fast.

Every time I sit at her computer I tap and wonder why nothing happens – until I remember. I get better at remembering

Now, I have to figure out how to get that iMovie to iDVD. Sometimes I manage, sometimes I don’t. And I think I did the same as last time… go figure!

I finally was able to burn a DVD, happily turned on the TV to test it…

… and disappointment.

It plays even jumps to the chaptures but the black background is awfully pixly.

I try to “transfer” it as a lower quality because the first time I chose higher quality. Same result.

More Ideas

Then I have the idea to add 2009 and 2011 to the same DVD and if I can get hold of 2010 that one too. One DVD for 4 years. Not sure if that works, but hey, I can try, right?

I figure I should put them on DVD anyways and if I can manage to add them all to one DVD, even people who have left the choir might want to by their own copy.

So, I’m working now on 2009. And find that some footage is missing.

I must have tried to make a movie back then because some of the files are already in iMovie format but that one footage I cannot add – it’s not in iMovie format. Grrr…

So I go online… search… and I find tons of great videos with tips for iMovie.

And I find a software called SnowFox that converts to iMovie, even to iPhone.

I use the free trial version but it only converts 3 minutes.

AND I’M BLOWN AWAY!

I grab my credit card and buy it!

The quality is SO MUCH BETTER! It’s like day and night.

I’m really tempted to do 2012 again, but then it’s very complicated. I had cut and moved a lot, added sound, I’m not sure if I can repeat it. Or if I want to invest the time.

I guess people will have to live with it

While those 2009 files are now converting, I’ll go hunt a bit more for iMovie and video tips.

BTW did you know you can make an entire film with iPhone?

I really start to digg making movies. When I figure out how to upload them to Youtube (or somewhere else) I can put them on my blog here and share them with everybody
