Bruises, Contusions and Pain – Oh MY! Papaya (Papain) and Pineapple (Bromelain) Enzymes

Recently my son was complaining of pain in his ankle during Football practice. He saw the AD (Assistant Director) who weighed the benefits of ‘sticking it through’ against ‘better safe than damaged for life’. I am quite happy that she chose to alert us and ask us to take him to a doctor to have him checked out.
The doctor did a full inspection and found…
No Broken Bones…
No Hairline Fractures…
No Sprains…
No Tendon issues…
But she did notice that there was some bruising above the ankle that could cause pain to radiate into the ankle. So, after the appointment was over, and with a few days of doctor prescribed ‘no football’ until it heals… I went to my friends and to the internet for some information on anything we could do to help him get back onto the football field as fast as possible. After missing one practice and a scrimmage, Rowan was practically begging us to let him play again.
Through a very good friend of mine, I was alerted to the existence of Bromelain, a pineapple enzyme that can be used to breakdown bruised tissue and expel it from the body. Another friend of mine, when I mentioned about the possible use of Bromelain, went into a long story of how he had used to sell this enzyme (when it was only available by prescription) to people who worked in warehouses and would often complain about bruising from normal activities in their jobs, like working forklifts, or running into them…
So I decided to check this out. I went to Trader Joe’s and picked up a bottle of Trader Joe’s Natural Papaya & Pineapple Enzymes Dietary Supplement (100 chewable tablets). Since, I also have some bruising on my shins, I decided to start taking this along with my son.
My friend told me that the enzyme that effects the bruising is the Bromelain, not the Papain. The Bomelain, unfortunately, is difficult on the stomach, so, by itself, it is not suggested to be used in combination with any digestive track issues and not for longer than 10 days. So Papain to the rescue!! Papain, the papaya enzymes, is a digestive aid and will protect the body from the adverse effects of the Pineapple enzymes.
After the first day of use, my son was telling me that his bruises did not hurt and that the only effect that his bruising was having on him now was the discolored skin. And even the discolored skin was starting to fade. This picture here is from after 3 days of using these enzymes. I don’t have a ‘before’ picture, but if you can imagine a doctor taking him out of football for ‘deep bruising’…
A happy side-effect, and something anyone with young boys in the house should consider, is the effect that Papain has on Flatulence. Papaya Enzymes are known to help breakdown proteins, according to www.livestrong.org. Which means that the odiferousness of the household can suddely become ‘somewhat controlled’ by use of this enzyme. Trader Joe’s didn’t have the Papaya Enzyme by itself, so I will be looking for a source that has it seperate. If you know where to find it, please let me know.
It is important to mention that these are dietary supplements and that no conclusive medical research supports the use of papaya enzymes to prevent or treat any medical condition.
