Which Came First? What?!?

So I heard some people the other day talking about the old adage of which came first, the chicken or the egg.  As much as I am completely done discussing this type of question I started thinking about this concept.  Side note, I like Dragons, so they might show up here a couple of times. ::grin::

I have people come to me with questions about what they should do to build a business, and I always tend to start off with the concept of, well do you want to build something new, or do you want to get something already built.  For instance, if I buy a laundromat, I am basically getting the chicken.  If I want to build a better laundromat, I’ll be getting the egg.

I like the concept of dragon eggs, I have ideas that I come up with all of the time where I think, hey that would be a great idea!  I write those ideas down and then usually let them sit for a while.  Dragon eggs are kindof like that, if you know any of the lore of a dragon egg, it hatches when the time is right, when the environment outside of the egg is right to birth the dragon.  This is kind of powerful, and using that thought….  I have a lot of dragons in my office.  ::grin::

When you get the chicken, fully grown, lays eggs makes fertilizer, etc, you are getting that chicken with all of its habits, traits and faults, but you have a full grown chicken! (dragon!)

I have worked in software development for a while and really that is very much like the egg. You come up with an idea, you have to develop your strategy, your timeline and you have to fill the informational gaps. (hire people or learn to do it yourself)  When you have this dragon egg, you have to create an environment around it that is ideal for the dragon to hatch, you have to build your knowledge of dragons, you have to keep the egg warm, you have to do a lot of self discovery of what you don’t know, so that you know it.  The egg will hatch. When the egg hatches, you will now have a chick (baby dragons are cool!).  That chick will need to be taken care of, encouraged, fed correctly, protected and it will grow into a full chicken that produces what you want.

So, which came first? Who Cares! If you get the egg, you will have a chicken you understand and produces how you want, you will know that dragon well and can work with it very effectively.  If you get the chicken fully grown, you will have a huge learning curve to figure out what that chicken needs from you to do what you want it to.  A fully grown dragon can be unruly if you make mistakes. (villagers! cattle! Run for your lives) A dragon you grow will respond to you and be fully yours.

So, when you ask what you should do to build a business, remember, you have to pay more for the fully grown chicken that you would for the egg, and the egg will truly be yours right away.  If you choose the egg, you grow as the chick grows.  You learn more about that business growing from the egg.
