Power Breathing!

Build your lung capacity through Power Breathing. It is also a proven fact that if you get more oxygen into your system your body will burn more fat stores and your cells become healthier.

What in the world is Power Breathing you ask?

Power Breathing is a way to train your lungs to have more capacity and hold your breath longer while putting more oxygen into you bodies systems. It is based on a count. You start out with a minimal count ratio and build up.

This is great for swimmers, athletes of any kind or someone who is trying to quit smoking and wants to work on reversing the damages of cigarette smoke. In addition, it is great for those who want to lose weight to super oxygenate their system to burn off more fat.

Let’s give it a try!

First you will want to be in comfortable clothing. (No tight jeans around the waist)

Next sit in a chair and sit upright with your feet flat on the floor or sit on the floor with your legs crossed and arms relaxed, hands resting on your thighs or on your knees.

Optionally, you can choose to close your eyes or not. If you do this outside in nature, eyes open is wonderful. If inside eyes closed may be more appropriate to block out visions of technology around us. You could also put on some soft music or just listen to the sounds around you. Power Breathing can be very meditative and relaxing as you learn to expand your lungs capabilities and health.

Start Increasing Your Lung Capacity Now!

There is an technique I have been practicing to work on lung capacity.  It’s amazing how much longer I am able to hold my breath. It is called “Power Breathing”

The ratio count is 1-4-2,

Example:

  • Inhale for count of 4, (fill your lungs completely in this count)
  • Hold for a count of 16,
  • Exhale for a count of 8. (empty your lungs completely in this count)
  • Use your diaphragm to help you control the exhale of the last bit of air before breathing in again.

You do 10 cycles in a set, once a day.  Practice this set for a week or until comfortable. Then, increase your count to 5 in, 20 hold, 10 out.  A 10 breath set. Again, do this for a week or until comfortable. Increase again. See what you can work up to. If starting with 4-16-8 is hard for you, then start with 3-12-6. It is a little faster pace but if holding for 16 stretches you to much, it is ok to start with less and work up. It is all about improvement and we have to start somewhere to see how far we can go.

This exercise helps my staff at the city pool to prepare for the summer and underwater rescue. Not to mention, it also oxygenates the body system, giving more energy and some say, helps to burn calories.

How did you do?

If you felt light headed at first, that is ok. Just take a few deep breaths.

You can also do this exercise while you are out for your walk, once you have mastered it. You will burn more calories that way. Of course if this makes you light headed you are not ready to do it with exercise. Increase your lung capacity a little bit more before moving on to this advanced stage.

Enjoy this new way of breathing for your health!
