Online Backup System – One of the most common things that computer owners are urged to do is to make sure that they keep extra copies of their files in a safe place just in case something should happen to their computer.
This is critical, because so many precious things like baby photos or business contact information are now stored in a digital format that could be easily destroyed if something were to happen to the computer holding them. When you are getting a system in place to do this, though, you need to think about what kind of files you want to include in your online backup.
Your limitations are going to depend somewhat on the type of service you have acquired. The first thing that you need to look at is the amount of storage that you have the ability to use. Some providers will promise unlimited amounts, while others will put a cap on how much you can upload to their servers. If you have a limit, you may be able to use the service to keep safe copies of things like receipts, spreadsheets, and other business documents, but it might not be enough space to hold all of your media files. If you have to make a choice between different options, always put the priority on the files you can not replace over those that you could potentially buy again.
Backup Software – Another limitation you may face in using an online backup service is your own bandwidth.
Some Internet Service Providers put caps on the amount of it that you can use in a month without receiving a warning from them. If this affects you and you do a lot of work on taking and editing large files like videos, there is a possibility that you could run over the limit that your ISP has set. In this case, it is probably a good idea to think seriously about how often the changes you have made really need to be backed up. An edit that you could replicate with just a few minutes of work can probably wait a while before being sent out to the server, while something you have put an entire workday into needs to be protected.
Online Storage – Making good decisions about what you want to protect and how frequently it needs to be copied will help you to make the best possible use of your available resources.
It does take a little bit of thought to get a good system into place, but once you have established how you are going to operate it is very easy to maintain.
