Fighter jets on the serious move
Someone just passed this over to me on Facebook and if you’re into fighter jets then turn up your speakers and enjoy for a few minutes.
I don’t know about you but these guys are really flying extremely low to do all of this and they are either totally mad or very very experienced. I prefer to think the latter:-) with a little of the former. Just how many years does it take to be able to accurately point those mighty machines and keep them level at those heights. I particularly liked the one going over water and it looks like he is going through the sound barrier.
Fighter jets at our airshow
Talking about fighter jets, in this part of the world at around the end of May we hold an airshow along the seafront at Southend-on-Sea. Over the years we’ve had a variety of aircraft including a low level flypast of Concord when it was still active. On this particular occasion some friends and I were having lunch in a small cafe on the seafront just a couple of days before the event. Anyway, we were quietly sitting there when all of a sudden we heard something like a whistle and then an almighty roar as this jet flew around 150 ft off of the ground directly above our heads. Talk about heart stopping. I think my digestive juices went into stop mode at that minute. Now I know what it must feel like if in the battlefield and one of these things comes over on a bombing run or to strafe the area. Not nice.
We did have an opportunity last year to go over to our local airport and take a look at a Vulcan bomber that is in the process of regeneration and get it up and flying once again. Not really one of those really quick fighter jets but it went quick enough in it’s heyday. This beast had the capability to unload a nuclear device on some unsuspecting enemy from a great height and leg it off in the distance before it landed. The space inside the cockpit was tight to say the least and bear in mind only the pilot and the first officer had a parachute. The other three people had to just jump out. There is a lot of original equipment on the flight-deck that is still used in some planes today and I rather liked the rear-view camera to see what’s happening behind you. Some of the other more basic conveniences are more mundane…if you know what I mean.
It is hoped to get it’s flying license either sometime this year or early next. At present it does occasional run ups and coasts down the runway to make sure all is well. It could do with a coat of paint as well as it’s been standing out in all weathers for years. There is a club that is putting on open days specifically to assist in funding the refurbishment.
