Here are some fun facts to know about cherry picking in Canada and things I learned while doing it.

If you have the opportunity to do it…do it! If you are in school or if you are a seasonal worker, this is one of the best thing you could do for your summer. It can be lucrative while enjoying the lifestyle of the Cherry Picker.

I am right now in my first year of being a flight attendant and we get laid off in May, so it is a perfect opportunity for me to go back and enjoy the Cherry Picking Lifestyle in Canada.

My experience is limited to the Okanagan Valley in British Columbia but I guess it can be a good enough template that you can use for elsewhere.

Here are some of the cool things about Cherry Picking in Canada:

1. No bills to pay(camping is provided)

2. It rains rarely(Okanagan Valley)

3. Beautiful settings

4. Work from 5Am to Noon, which leave the rest of the day for the beach

5. Paid by production(2.50$/3.00$ per bucket). Making 200$/day is easy with practice

Where to Go?

Located at the heart of British-Columbia, this region is a perfect place to grow fruits. This is where most of the fruit picking in done on the west coast.

My personal favorite place to go cherry pick is in Naramata, a little town East en Penticton. It is small and everything is close by. The people are friendly and there is more than enough cherry picking opportunity.

I personally never “reserved” a spot in order to make sure that I had place to work. It is kind of first there first serve. Still, the owners of the place always like to know in advance if he can count on people showing up…but even though some people reserve a place, they don’t always show up because it is such a beautiful place that people get distracted sometime!

What I have learned while Cherry Picking in Canada

I learned to let go of plans and go with the flow there. Really, the numbers of magical people and event that happened by just feeling the moments would have never happen if I was stuck on a definite trajectory.

While I was travelling I had interesting conversation that brought me to different cherry farms that I couldn’t plan because I just didn’t know.

I’ve met people that became long time friends and most of all…I had a blast.

Another thing that I learned is that there is a big difference between people who are use to work for time rather than production.

You see, while cherry picking in the Okanagan, there are people who finish their first day and they realize that they have made about 5$ an hour because they were not productive enough(it is normal at first because there are techniques to be learned.) Some of them quit right here and there.

I have met people who were able to make between 300-400$ a day cherry picking away. They were always learning, improving and also exchanging with other top producer.

Most of all, what I learned is that, it is possible to make money while enjoying a Lifestyle. We don’t have to slave away at a job that we hate. If you want to create your dream lifestyle, it is possible.
