How to make sushi?

A Step By Step Guide

If you want to make good sushi to bring to your friends’ party, host a sushi party, impress a date or express love to your beloved, You’ve come to the right place!

I worked at a fine sushi restaurant for a year and I rolled a lot of ‘em. I ate so much of it that I couldn’t eat any for months.

I don’t work there anymore, but I can tell you that I am eternally grateful to have learned that skill which helped me to make a lot of people happy.

How To Make Sushi at Home

Step 1 – How to Make Sushi Rice

Let’s keep it simple

Choose the Right Rice

Take Sushi Rice at the Super Market or Calrose rice. If you are in a japenese market “shari”.

Measure and prepare

Wash the rice with running water until there is no more starch coming out of it. Roll it around with your hand. Then use either the ratio that is on the box or do like me, I add a little more water than rice. Like 1.15 to 1 ratio

Cooking the rice

The rice should be cooked on high heat and stir a little until the water boils.  Then lower the heat to minimum and cover the pot.  After about 8 minutes check if there is still water – If not, that means that the rice is ready. If not, check back every minute.

Taking out the rice

Only use wooden spoon – not metal. Why? Because it damages the rice and might react with the vinegar we will add later. Also, don’t scrape the rice at the bottom. Just let it be.

Seasoning the rice

That is the point most people miss. Sushi Rice is Seasoned!

  • For 3 cups of rice, use ½ cup of rice vinegar, 2 tablespoons of sugar and 2 teaspoons of salt. I also like to add some sake
  • Mix together in small pot, on medium heat until all solids are mixed in.
  • Pour mixture on rice and stir well.
  • Let rice cool down for a few minutes until it is near room temperature. Don’t put the rice in the fridge to make it cool faster – that will damage the rice. You can, however, use a fan.

Wow, I didn’t expect this part to take so many words!  Check out this post for part 2 of making your own delicious sushi at home.

Enjoy!
