LinkedIn is a publicly held company that has a diversified business model with revenues coming from talent solutions, premium subscriptions and marketing solutions.
With more than 187 million professionals as its members in over 200 countries, LinkedIn is undoubtedly the world’s largest professional network. Its members performed nearly 4.2 billion professionally oriented searches in 2011.
Founded by Reid Hoffman, Allen Blue, Konstantin Guericke, Eric Ly and Jean-Luc Vaillant, LinkedIn t is a great platform to stay informed about your contacts and about your industry.
LinkedIn started out in the living room of co-founder Reid Hoffman in the year 2002, but was officially launched on May 5, 2003. It enables you to find people and information you need to achieve your goals. You will be benefited immensely if you control your professional identity online using LinkedIn.
Around two professionals are signing up to LinkedIn every second. Unfortunately there are many fake profiles in LinkedIn. The challenge is to identify them. Here are a few tips on how to identify fake profiles on LinkedIn.
Lower case first name and last name is a sign of a fake profile. People who intend to create a profile on a professional network like LinkedIn will definitely take care to not make such an error.
Stock photo is another sign of a fake profile. Minimally filled out profile with a large number of groups is another red flag for identifying fake LinkedIn profiles. Generic company name is another trigger for identifying fake profile in this network.
It is been observed that people who create fake profiles use rhythmic names like Joe Jackson, etc. If you come across such names, it is better to investigate further to confirm that the person is genuine.
These are simple cases of fake profiles. More complex fake profiles exist, with well filled out profiles and real pictures. Their last names also appear genuine. These people steal the identities of well-established members of the society (like the CEOs, CFOs, etc) and try to connect with others. In these cases it is advisable to contact the person and to speak to him/her. Google will help you to find the real person.
LinkedIn is a community of well-meaning professionals who are working to improve our world. It is the responsibility of each and every member to keep the network clean.
In an effort to achieve this endeavor, if you come across a fake profile, flag it for spam. You have this option just under the Public Profile URL on the bottom right. LinkedIn will remove the account from the network if sufficient numbers of people flag it for spam.
But before you flag any account for spam, you need to be 100 percent sure that it is spam. Otherwise you will be causing unnecessary inconvenience to a genuine member.
It is indeed a challenge to identify a fake profile in LinkedIn. By using the above-mentioned guidelines, you will be able to do so and by taking appropriate action you will help to keep the network clean.
