Fluoride is the anion F-. Like other halides, it is a monovalent ion. Fluoride is found in low concentrations in drinking water and food. It is used extensively in today’s world. It is an ingredient in toothpastes and mouth washes.
The drinking water is fluoridated as it is believed that fluoride prevents tooth decay. Fluoride is an industrial waste product. It is a byproduct aluminum and fertilizer industries.
Fluoride has many harmful effects. The fluoride in public water is usually at the rate of 1 ppm. Even at such small quantities, it can be harmful. According to medical experts, one-tenth of an ounce of fluoride can kill a person.
Not many people know that fluoride is more poisonous than lead. It is only slightly less poisonous than arsenic. Even though a person will not die immediately after drinking one glass of fluorinated water, regular use of fluorinated water causes significant damage to general health.
How to identify fluoride poisoning? Dental fluorosis is one of the sure signs of fluoride poisoning. In mild cases, it appears as a chalky area on the tooth, but in severe cases the teeth becomes yellow-brown or black. The tip of the affected tooth may also break off.
Fluoride causes damage to enzymes in tissues and organs, thereby leading to a wide range of chronic diseases. Fluoride weakens the immune system. It is known to cause allergic reactions.
Fluoride may cause allergic reactions like eczema, dermatitis and hives. Some experts believe that regular use of fluoride causes birth defects. It is also known to cause genetic damage.
Fluoride can cause significant harm to kidneys. It is known to aggravate kidney diseases. Diabetics should avoid consumption of fluoride, as it aggravates the medical condition. Fluoride also aggravates hypothyroidism, a medical condition in which the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone.
The amount of fluoride consumed with drinking water is enough to lower thyroid activity in human beings. Fluoride breaks down collagen, thereby causing wrinkles on the skin; and weakening of ligaments, muscles and tendons.
Fluoride causes damage to the gums by destroying the enzymes. It slows down the ability of the gums to repair themselves. People exposed to high levels of fluoride in the air are more likely to be affected by lung cancer.
Fluoridated toothpaste contains 1,000 ppm fluoride. This can be extremely dangerous to children, as they tend to swallow the toothpaste. It is always advisable to use non-fluoridated tooth paste. You may try using baking soda and sea salt to clean the teeth.
Some educational institutions conduct fluoride mouth rinse programs every week. The children are asked to swish fluoride solution in their mouth. Swallowing the solution can cause immense harm to your child’s health. It is advisable to get your child out of such programs.
Experts believe that fluoride is a carcinogenic. It causes cancer in many ways. It destabilizes the DNA by breaking the hydrogen bonds that hold the DNA together. Fluoride is known to cause uncontrolled growth of cells. It also depresses the DNA repair system by 50 percent.
Fluoride promotes ill health. It is always advisable to consciously avoid consuming fluoride.
