SEO HELP FOR NEWBIES FROM A NEWBIE
What is SEO? SEO is the abbreviation for Search engine optimization and is the process of making your website, web page or blog visible in a search engine like Google, Bing, MSN search, etc. Basically the higher you rank on the search results page, the more traffic or visitors you will receive to your page. There are two types of SEO, off page SEO and on page SEO.
SEO Help – On Page SEO – What is it?
On page SEO is what you do to get your site noticed. It’s what you do to get your blogs noticed by Google and other search engines.
This can be easily done by following these simple steps when writing your posts.
- Write your blog post
- Use Google Keyword Tool to choose the best keyword within your post. (Click here to access the Google Keyword Tool.)
- Place your keyword in your post.
Tips on putting your keyword in your post.
- Place your keyword in your title. (See my keyword ”SEO Help” in my title)
- Place your keyword in each of your headings. Be sure not to repeat the same line of text or you will look too automated. (See the keyword “SEO Help” in all my headings.)
- Bold, underline or make italic your keywords. (Look throughout this post for the bolded and underlined keyword “SEO Help“)
- Post should be 500-700 words long.
- Your keyword density should be between 1%-3%. More than 3% is considered “keyword stuffing” and is often penalized in the search engines. (This post has a the keyword “SEO Help” at 1.25%.)
- Be sure to place your keyword in the first and last sentence of your post.
SEO Help – Off Page SEO – What is it?
Off page SEO is when you create back-links that go to your site and is telling Google this is your site and its important. The more back-links you have the more Google will view your site as important.
SEO help for creating back-links
The first thing you want to do to is create a ping-back. Whats a ping-back? A ping-back is when a link is created to another blog to validate what you said in your post. This shows those reading your post that others have the same view as you and that what you are saying is important. It is also a good strategy if you are using WordPress to link to another WordPress blog because WordPress will automatically “ping” it back to you.
Here are the steps:
- Follow steps 1-3 from above.
- Google the keyword you picked. Choose other top ranking blog posts that are related to your post.
- Copy the URL from your address bar while viewing that post.
- Insert that link into your post as another source for information for your reader.
It takes very little time to do this and once you get into the habit with each of your posts you are creating another way to get traffic to your site.
SEO Help for creating back-links with Ping.fm
Ping.fm is an excellent way to get back-links to your blog post and its a free service. What Ping.fm does is it updates your social networks all at once, automatically. Your social networks meaning your facebook, twitter, etc.
What Ping.fm uses is your RSS feed from your blog. RSS feeds are used by bloggers to syndicate their posts quickly and automatically. It is also used by your readers to receive updates when you publish a new post. You can usually find it at the top of a page that you are viewing and may have a button that looks like this→
ONE STEP:
- Set up an account with Ping.fm and follow the instructions.
It’s a free service but it does take some time because you do have to setup the accounts on all the social networks. Remember you only have to do this ONCE and it’s done!
Note: You will have the option to choose whether to have the link open in a new tab or window and I would choose to do that because then your reader won’t lose track of the post they are currently on. (Yours!)
SEO Help – Newbie Advice
As a newbie myself I understand how easy it is to become overwhelmed and frustrated. Every time you start to feel this way. Stop what you are doing and take a breath. Remember your goals and focus on only ONE thing at a time. We get overwhelmed because we start to pull ourselves in too many directions at once. Do ONE thing at a time and give yourself credit for it. Then move on to the next item. Just like SEO its a process.
