2000 young adults praising God at Compel Night Brooklyn Tabernacle

My First Exposure To Transitions Ministry

So last night was my first exposure to Transitions Ministry.

Transitions Ministry is the young adult ministry of Brooklyn Tabernacle.  As one of the largest young adult ministries in the city of New York, they host a special event geared specifically towards young adults twice a month.

Recently, I’ve been noticing a bunch of my friends talking about how awesome this ministry is.  In fact, I was talking to one of my friends in particular on Facebook.  She was sharing with me how God has been moving in her life in such a powerful way and she credited Transitions Ministry as one of the reasons why.

So earlier this week, I see yet ANOTHER post from one of my friends talking about Transitions Ministry.  They had an event coming up called Compel Night.  However, what really hooked me and got my interest was the tagline for the event.  The tagline was…

“Spread Love It’s The Brooklyn Way!”

What you may not know is that this is a line from one of my favorite rappers of all time, The Notorious B.I.G.  I thought that was such a clever tagline and because of that I had to check out this ministry and see what they were doing.

The problem is, Transitions Ministry starts at 7:00pm in Brooklyn, New York.  On Friday nights, I work out of one of my Cellular Sales Verizon Wireless Stores until 7:00pm in a town called Huntington, New York, which is almost 40 miles away.

I mention this to the same friend that I was talking to before and she told me that even if I only catch the last 30 minutes of the event, it would be worth it.

Talk about an endorsement!

So after barely getting out of work (and it was crazy I almost got stuck at work because we were short staffed), I made the drive all the way to Brooklyn New York, despite the fact that I had to be up early the next morning because I was scheduled to work two shifts at two different stores.  Just to see what all this “hype” was about regarding Transitions Ministry.

I drove around for 10 minutes trying to find parking.  I walked around for another 15 to 20 minutes because I couldn’t find the building.  Finally, I stroll into the event at around 8:45pm.

Transitions Ministry – My Thoughts?

So I arrive at the Transitions Ministry event.  What were my thoughts?

I was blown away!

There were literally over a thousand young adults in this place!  It was amazing!  I could argue that I didn’t even know there were a thousand young adult Christians in New York City, nevermind there being a single place with more than a thousand gathered in one evening.

It certainly didn’t hurt that there were a bunch of fine ladies in the building!

But more importantly than that, God was definitely in the building!

The preacher was a young man by the name of Rich Wilkerson Jr.  Pastor Wilkerson is the young adult Pastor of a young adult ministry in Tampa, Florida, where I believe they have over 1000 young adults in their ministry as well.  He was funny, entertaining and relevant.

Pastor Rich Wilkerson Jr

What I Learned at Transitions Ministry

He preached from Mark Chapter 2, the story of the paralyzed man that Jesus healed.  A group of men were so determined to get this paralyzed man to Jesus that they went to the roof of the house that Jesus was staying at and brought the man down from above.

One of the most powerful quotes he shared during his sermon was as follows:

God doesn’t call the qualified.  He qualifies the called.

As a man going through some tough times in my life right now, I definitely question whether I’m qualified for God to use me.  When you are finally starting to make progress in life and ministry, just to get completely knocked down by life and starting from square one, like I have recently, you definitely wonder whether God could ever use somebody like that.

However, the scriptures are filled with example after example of people who clearly wasn’t qualified by mans standards, but who God qualified and used for His glory.  So it really doesn’t matter what I lack or do not lack.  As long as I am willing to be used by Him, I was reminded that God can still use me anyway.

I was also reminded of the need for determination.  These men were successful because they had faith and they were committed to their goal.  It certainly wasn’t convenient to try and get their friend to Jesus.  However, it was certainly worth it when Jesus was able to heal their friend.

In life serving God certainly isn’t going to be convenient However, I definitely believe that it is worth it.

So did Transitions Ministry live up to the hype?  I can say yes it did!  I enjoyed myself, was blessed by the experience and will make sure that this is not the last event that I attend.
