How to earn trust?

Restored from the Empower Network archive (2011–2017), lightly edited to meet our current advertising standards. Views are the original author’s.

Sometime we find ourselves faced with issues with our sincerity and dedication to a certain person, project, event or job. However, if we do mess up and showed that we are just playing around or just faking what we really feel and even lying would really really exhibit a sense of deception. It would also manifest what our true colors are, and would definitely create an air of conflict if not it would result to disagreement between two parties.
What do we mean by the word trust? Some people would actually give definition about being true and sincere. Of course, truthfulness is the main essential character trait that we can think of when we speak about trust. There are situations where we are torn and we would need some enlightenment whether we tell the truth or tell a lie. Like for instance, a colleague who is also a friend of yours eventually deleted some company files during one of your overtime sessions. You both have the option to lie and tell your bosses that it was a system glitch and your bosses might investigate on it. With that, an investigation is done and it was found out that you and your friend lied and committed some mistake by not telling the truth to your bosses. As a result, you both are terminated and do not have a job anymore. Now should you be happy because you covered up for the sake of your friendship or should you be sad because you lost your job due to a wrong decision of hiding your friends mistake by lying.
Let’s look at the fundamentals first, going back to the terminology trust, how do we define it? Changingminds.org defines trust as is both and emotional and logical act. Emotionally, it is where you expose your vulnerabilities to people, but believing they will not take advantage of your openness. Logically, it is where you have assessed the probabilities of gain and loss, calculating expected utility based on hard performance data, and concluded that the person in question will behave in a predictable manner. In practice, trust is a bit of both. I trust you because I have experienced your trustworthiness and because I have faith in human nature. We feel trust. Emotions associated with trust include companionship, friendship, love, agreement, relaxation, comfort.
