Are You Still Keeping Your New Years Resolution?
Statistics show that 95% of people who have made a New Years Resolution have quit by January 15th. Is this you? Have you run out of gas? Have you given up on progress towards your resolution, goal or dream? Now is the time to add some exra effort and push ahead.
Daily Progress Equals Happiness
The secret to real happiness is progress. Making a little progress every day is the key to lasting happiness. Small steps will give you the slight edge which will, over time, add up to the large successes. You must commit to the small steps every day and then celebrate those small successes. You will not see the progress for a long time but, I guarantee that the compounding effects of small steps are the key to lasitng happiness. As Albert Einstein said: “If you want to live a happy life, tie it to a goal, not people or things.”
You Must Have a Compelling Vision
A Compelling Vision is something so exciting and attractive that it pulls you forward towards your goal. The emotional intensity of your compelling vision gets you moving. A compelling vision is:
- Positive – something deeply desired.
- Personal – something that will benefit others personally or directly (not just abstractly or “it seems like a good idea”).
- Possible – a destination you can see yourself reaching.
- Visual – something you can see.
- Vivid – crystal clear; the clearer the picture of the future, the better.
Here are some questions you can ask to further clarify your vision:
- How will this change benefit you?
- What about this vision excites you?
- How will achieving this vision make your life easier, or better?
You Must Have Strong Reasons
You must have strong reasons to push you through the tough times. Strong Reasons Make Strong Actions. Your strong reason is your WHY. Why do you want to reach this goal? If you make your WHY strong enough, you will have the motivation to make it happen. Create as many Reasons Why as you can. The more reasons Why you have to succeed, the stronger your motivation to achieve your vision will be. Ask yourself questions about the pain of not achieving your goal as well as the pleasure of reaching it. You are motivated by the possibility of pain, and you are motivated to seek pleasure so be sure you have some Whys in each area.
“The starting point of all achievement is desire. Keep this constantly in mind. Weak desires bring weak results, just as a small amount of fire makes a small amount of heat.” ~ Napoleon Hill
You Must Review Your Goals Every Day
Here is a very easy process for reviewing your goals every day:
1) Put your top five goals on a 3×5 card and carry them around with you all the time, reviewing them several times a day.
2) In the evening before you go to bed, write down two steps you can take the following day towards each of your top five goals. They can be the very smallest of steps. Even something as simple as making a phone call or researching something on the internet.
If you do this one simple program of reviewing your goals every day this year I guarantee you will be astounded about how much you accomplish over a year!

Don’t compare your success to others. Be true to yourself and go at your own pace. You are unique and your success is unique to you! Celebrate your small successes.
