How Does Acupuncture Work: The Science Behind Acupuncture!
Acupuncture is a method of treatment that originated in ancient China. Acupuncturists treat patients with the help of thin, solid needles. They insert the needles at specific locations in the human body in an endeavor to get the required effect.
Whether acupuncture works is beyond doubt. Many people have benefited by acupuncture for thousands of years. It has provided relief from pain, nausea, vomiting, and many more ailments.
Have a look at this video with Dr. Zheng describing Acupuncture;
To further explain how acupuncture works, you need to know what is yin and yang. Yin and yang are most fundamental to Chine traditional medicine. It is the very foundation of diagnosis and treatment.
Yin and yang are opposites, yet inseparable. They cannot exist without the other. For instance, if yin is darkness, yang is light. The Tai Ji diagram shows their relationship very well. When there preponderance or deficiency of yin or yang, there is imbalance. This imbalance leads to diseases. Acupuncture restores the balance.
Some people are of the opinion that acupuncture is like hypnosis. Some say it is placebo. Experts in the field of medicine have conducted scientific double blind studies to prove otherwise.
Research scientists at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey proved that acupuncture decreased pain by working on the brain. They used functional MRI to prove this.
For many years, medical practitioners in the west were reluctant to use acupuncture as they did not know why it was effective. The above mentioned studies have changed their minds in favor of this amazing method of treatment to a certain extent.
Acupuncture deals with acupoints. These points are tiny locations on the skin that contain relatively concentrated nerve endings, blood vessels and lymphatics. These points are identifiable by their lower electrical resistance. They are usually located in small depressions detectable by trained acupuncturists.
By placing the needles in acupoints, acupuncturists initiate events that are grouped into three theories. These theories will give you a good idea of how acupuncture actually works.
The neuroendocrine theory: Beta endorphin, serotonin, etc are neurotransmitters. They modulate the effects of acupuncture, resulting in physiological effects on the body. Some experts are of the opinion that structures other than nerves are responsible for some of the effects of acupuncture.
It is a proven fact that veins and cerebral spinal fluid carry neurotransmitters and hormones that mediate effects like pain control. Enhanced WBC levels, which is a known effect of acupuncture, involves the nervous system and neuroendocrine transmitters.
The neurological theory: Acupuncture works on nerve fibers, thereby altering the perception of pain. It stimulates peripheral nerves that sequentially turn off specific nerve fibers in the CNS, thereby ceasing the transmission of pain impulses.
Local mediation: Due to concentration of nerve endings, some cells and vessels at acupoints, a response is created when needles are inserted in these points. This response triggers a cascade of chemical, enzymatic and vasoactive changes that result in the patient getting relief.
Acupuncture’s popularity is increasing all over the world. It definitely makes sense to use this wonderful system of medicine. However it is very important to ensure that you are treated by an expert acupuncturist.
“Acupuncture’s use for certain conditions has been endorsed by the United States National Institutes of Health, the National Health Service of the United Kingdom, the World Health Organization,[1][19] and theNational Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine.[20][21][22][23] Some scientists have criticized these endorsements as being unduly credulous and not including objections to or criticisms of the research used to support acupuncture’s effectiveness.[24][25][26“
