Outrageous athletic salaries!
Do you ever wonder why athletic salaries are so outrageous? So outrageous, that theprice of going to any kind of ball game or sports event makes one want to wince! The athletessalary is based on several things. This includes bonuses, salaries, appearance fees, endorsements, prize money, and liscensing. Some of these are out of our control, but salaries need to be reevaluated.
Look at Chicago Bull, Derrick Rose. He earns nine million a year, which translates into 27,000 dollars a day. That is one heck of an athletic salary,considering he has not played one day this year due to an injury. I am not blaming him for collecting what is offered; I am blaming crazy management!
In the real business world, people are paid a base salary and only get bonuses through their MBO’s, management by objectives. An employee sits down once a year with their boss and determines one by one, what they will accomplish throughout the year; this accomplishment has a price tag attached to it. So let’s say I accomplished six of my MBO’s each worth one thousand dollars, I would get a bonus of six thousand dollars.
Now, I believe athletes should be set to this standard. They all should have a base salary; and then they would have to earn the rest by MBP’s, management by performance. In the case of Derrick Rose, since he did not play at all this year, he would loose out on his MBP’s, but not his base salary. Think how much money could be saved from all those athletes that get hurt, and do not play. Base salary only, not MBP’s.
I really believe an athlete would stretch himself more, to earn the bonuses. It just should not be given to him year by year; especially considering his performance may vary year by year. This payment system would equalize every team to be able to afford some of the best. Now, not just the New York Yankee’s or the Miami Heat could afford good players, but every team could pay the base salary. The base salary would be different for a rookie, or a seasoned player, but the MBP’s, would be a chance to equalize pay for performance.
I am convinced this system would work, and it would knock down some of the outrageous costs to attend these games. A family of four cannot afford to attend a sports event at these current prices! Management by performance would affect athletic salaries, and also would make the consumer happy if prices were knocked down at the gate.
