Iron Man 3
To be honest, I have never been a fan of Marvel comics so I am not one to judge this on the basis of a foreknowledge of the comic back story.
When I watched the first Iron Man film, I was impressed but not blown away.
I find it frustrating when a film is made on the basis of being the first of a series and so skimps on having any real impact with the intention of building the story over a trilogy.
I felt a little bit like this with the first Iron Man but I still enjoyed it.
Iron Man 2 was a little bit stronger for me. I have this theory that one of the keys to a really good superhero film is if the bad guy is so wicked and causes such a threat that the hero has to destroy him. If you spend the whole film feeling on edge when the bad guy is around then the filmmaker has succeeded.
If the threat is weak then there is nothing driving the hero’s cause and so the audience isn’t moved.
Iron Man 2 had this a little bit more with Mickey Rourke’s Whiplash character. Although my wife felt it was truly forgettable.
Iron Man 3 seems to have Ben Kingsley playing ‘Mandarin’ who is originally supposed to be of oriental background, which although he is a great actor, doesn’t fill me with complete confidence that he will pose the necessary threat. Although in the trailer, it seems Tony Stark’s headquarters takes a good licking and he seems to be having identity crisis issues regarding his suit.
It seems that most third instalments of films nowadays seem to be severely lacking, I am personally not holding my breath for Iron Man 3. However, I do enjoy what Robert Downey Jr. Brings to the character so I will go with an open mind and hopefully there will be some classic superhero spectacle and a decent plot line.
