NLP Trick To Move Through Mental Blocks

Restored from the Empower Network archive (2011–2017), lightly edited to meet our current advertising standards. Views are the original author’s.

I’ve never really used NLP or any other type of “brain reprogramming”, but the truth is a lot of the time our brains do some funny things that we can’t understand because we don’t what is causing a certain type of response.

I actually used to brush off NLP (or neuro-linguistic programming) as a bit of fluff, or honestly, a “male” way to understand that sometimes our brains have emotional reactions rather than logical ones.

I felt that men just wanted to slap some scientific name on taking the time to better understand yourself so they didn’t feel weeny but could benefit from introspection.

But then my friend Rob Fore tried a cool NLP trick on me and I was shocked that it wasn’t some complicated scientific method, or lame affirmations, but just simple ways of creating new neural paths and weakening old ones.

In simple terms, making you feel less shitty when you find yourself having a shitty response to something.

This is just a rudimentary summary of his NLP trick, but enough to help you when you find yourself getting stuck and don’t know why!

How to Know You Need An NLP Trick

Sometimes when you are trying to do something new or a little outside of your comfort zone you will come across some kind of “hurt, habit, or hang-up” that is getting in your way.

The problem is that consciously you know what to do, you know usually how to do it, but you find that you can’t get yourself to.  One of these hurts, habits, or hang-ups is unconsciously blocking you from doing what you need to do.

Your unconscious has very important safeties in place that are there to stop you from doing something that might endanger you.

The difficulty comes in because it could just be some weird programming that makes you feel in danger.

For example, you might be afraid of calling your landlord to come fix something because you had a really nasty previous landlord that put you through hell and you’ve come to associate calling a landlord with extreme mental anguish (true story, blah).

So you put up with the broken whatever not realizing why you haven’t called.

There are two simple tests to know if you need an NLP trick.

1. Are you doing something you shouldn’t be doing?

(i.e. doing the dishes when you should be calling the landlord!)

2. Not doing something you should be doing.

(i.e. not calling the damn, landlord!)

If one of those two is happening you have probably come across a “hurt, habit or hangup” that you can work your NLP trick on.

Simple NLP Trick to Move Forward

1. Examine your body (mentally)

What are you feeling when you think about calling the landlord? Is there butterflies in your stomache? Does your chest clench?

2. Think about another time when you felt this way.

Bring up some memory that made you feel this way in your body.  So maybe right before having to break up with someone you cared about.

3. Create a music track that has music that really gets you down, mixed with music that inspires you.

First take yourself back to the bad memory and just feel as shitty as you can while listening to the low music, then change to the happy music and dance, sing along, wiggle your bum…whatever takes your fancy.

When the music changes go back to the miserable place. Then back to happy, dancing, singing, bum wiggling…. sad music get back to miserable…. happy bum, etc.

Make the sad parts shorter and the happy parts longer.

You’ll find by the end you just can’t get back to as miserable as before! End on the happy music and then go ahead and complete your scary task.

This simple NLP trick helps you create new neural pathways IN PLACE of the unhelpful ones you had before!
