Ever feel a little self-indulgent when trying to promote yourself? I remember how I used to feel when doing my marketing. Sometimes, I’d have to pretend that I was managing and promoting someone else, just to not feel so full of myself.

It’s not that I didn’t have confidence. It’s just after a while, I’ll be honest, marketing yourself can feel a little like “me, me, me!” which can feel hollow. I believe that’s why most of us really would rather someone else do our marketing. Because of the way it makes us feel promoting ourselves.

That’s what’s great about blogging really. It can be an expression like your music without being so self-indulgent. You can “share” what’s going on in your world without coming across as so promotion filled. Most artists I know aren’t selfish people. It’s kind of hard to be as an artist because you are so aware of the world around you. So self promotion does kind of go against our nature.

So the next question obviously is what in the world do you blog about? Here are a 7 ideas…

#1 The Story Behind The Song

What is your story behind your song? Are you a writer? What’s an interesting story you have behind one of your songs. Is there a cover song that has a particular meaning to you? You could write about a story behind that song. Maybe you know of someone’s song and share their story. This idea right here can give you tens of hundreds of things to blog about.

#2 Other People’s Music

What’s great about writing about other people’s music is that guess what happens? They will be likely to want to promote your blog post! If they promote your blog post you can reach a wider fan base and get more fans to your e-mail list. Be sure to let them know about the blog post and encourage them to share with their spear of influence.

#3 Make Lists

Lists are another great way to get the word out about your music. Be sure to tell everyone on that list about the blog post and again encourage them to share it. Readers generally love lists too because they can either check them out quickly or get more detail if they want. Maybe you could blog about top venues. Especially if it’s a venue you’re wanting to get into. A great way to start a connection.

#4 Your Passions

What other things do you love besides music? Or maybe a certain genre that you’re passionate about. Either way it’s easy for words to pour out onto the page when it’s something you really love.

#5 Inspiration

People love to be inspired, especially on social media. With all the negative stuff on the news and spread by other people, you’ll be a breath of fresh air by sharing inspiration. Make a list of your favorite quotes or talk about what inspires you.

#6 How To

There are plenty of thing you probably know how to do that others would love to learn. Maybe something as simple as how to play guitar, sharing a few chords. Maybe it can be how to write a song or something else you’re really good at. How to video spread really well on YouTube. Here’s my “How to” that I made on my example of an artist’s page. It took me 5 minutes. It’s called, “6 Videos on Beefing Up Your Songwriting”.

#7 Fun and Light

The most important thing is you have fun doing it. The more you do it, the faster you’ll get at it. Instead of just sharing that video on Facebook, share it on your blog as well. You can make a three minute video just talking to people like you would your friend. Keep it fun and light to attract more people.

Conclusion

Making your marketing about other people is the easiest way to get people engaged with what you’re doing. It’s why Facebook is so popular, because Facebook has made it about other people not themselves. Blogging is a great way to get people involved with what you’re doing and make it about other people.
