Time management and procrastination

Restored from the Empower Network archive (2011–2017), lightly edited to meet our current advertising standards. Views are the original author’s.

What is the other extreme of efficient time management? Well, it is procrastination and most of us love to hate it but we tend to live with it.

If you are avoiding certain tasks that are to be finished and later on experiencing guilt, then you are a victim of procrastination and you need time management.

Now let us take a look at several causes of the enemy of time management called procrastination.

Lack of motivation:

If the task that you have taken up is not actually close to your heart then you might feel like avoiding it. So, you need to find some relevance or you need to reward yourself for finishing the task on time. If you are really not interested in the project then you need to find several ways of making things more interesting.

Lack of skill sets:

If you are not capable of taking up the task then you feel like postponing it. Do you have the fear of embracing the unknown? In such a case, it is better to seek guidance or support from anyone who is an expert in that area.

Wrong assumptions:

If you think that ignoring your problems will make them disappear then you’re mistaken. You should not assume that everything will settle down if you close your eyes. In fact things will get worse if you ignore them.

Also, if you wrongly estimate a tough task thinking that you can take it up easily, then you will fall in the soup by the time you start handling it. This way, wrong assumptions wreck havoc when it comes to managing time.

Perfectionism:

If you are too obsessed with perfection in everything you do then it goes without saying that you are not going to finish the task till eternity. Any task should be given the right amount of importance that it deserves.

You should not give anything more than what it needs. So, you must be able to set a limit for perfection instead of trying to give undue attention to every small thing. That would royally hamper your entire project and you will keep dragging the work till eternity.

If you want to avoid procrastination and get into efficient time management then follow some tips given below:

  • Ensure that your work area is devoid of any kind of distractions.
  • Set limits for everything and stay within them without ever spending time on any activity.
  • Break big chunks of work into smaller ones. Small ones look easily manageable. Big things scare us. So remember the fact to break down everything to the minutest point.
  • Make sure that you do the tough and the boring things during the first part of the day when your mind is fresh. Later on, your mind will not co-operate if you don’t utilize your time well in the morning.
  • Be realistic in all your assumptions in all phases of planning and implementation. Don’t over estimate yourself or your capabilities. Also, plan to enjoy each and every step of your job so that you will be able to give your best to all the tasks instead of dragging yourself and torturing yourself.

This way, you can understand time management and stay away from procrastination.
