When you talk about the greatest video games of all time what is the first thought that crosses your mind? A blazing gun cutting through the enemy lines, held in the hands of a man who only seems to have hands and no torso, no head and no legs – the first person shooter games such as Call of Duty series? Or do you picture yourself in control of a man taller than 6ft who is capable of achieving unbelievable acrobatic feats?
How do you like you game design to be? Linear design games where the character’s maneuvers are strictly restricted with point of no returns or do you enjoy the open world surroundings where you could roam around wherever you want to? Today, this is perhaps all we could think of when we think of video games. But did you know that you could trace the history of video gaming as far back as 1947? Of course they did not call it video game back then. They called it amusement device. Here is the list of the greatest video games of all time.
Pac-Man: You will be surprised to know that it was a Pizza which gave the creators of Pac-man, one of the greatest and most popular games ever, the idea to create this game. How do you think the Pizza pie will look when you have eaten two slices of it? Exactly how Pac-Man looks. The game was first released in 1980 and became an instant hit worldwide.
Super Mario Bros.: Could you imagine an Italian plumber trying to save a princess? That’s exactly who Mario was. Designed in 1983 by Nintendo, this little plumber took the world by storm and became a household name. The Mario brothers (Mario and his little brother Luigi) have then and since saved Princess Peach (originally called Princess Toadstool) from the evil personified demon Bowser many times over.
SoulCalibur: During 1990s, 3D did not exactly mean the images and characters protruding out of your TV screen. 3D in computer graphics back then meant technology that rendered images in three geometric dimensions. While games like Mario and Pac-Man had their characters move in 2D, gaming technology evolved and sense of depth was introduced later on. Developed by Namco, SoulCalibur became one of the highest grossing video games of 1990s, selling over 1 million copies. It also received universal critical acclaims.
Grand Theft Auto IV (GTA IV): Do you know who Niko Bellic is? If not, then probably you are not one of the 25 million people who have purchased Grand Theft Auto IV video game. Released in 2008 by Rockstar Games, GTA IV not only received universal critical acclaims but also became one of the most played games ever. On May 13, 2008, this game broke the world record and became the highest grosser within 24 hours of its release.
Call of Duty Black Ops II: We can’t talk about the greatest video games of all time without the mention of Call of Duty Series games. Black Ops II, the ninth game in the Call of Duty series, became the highest entertainment grosser ever until its record was broken by Grand Theft Auto 5 very recently. Based on the first person shooter gameplay, this game offered linear mode and the first ever game in the history of Call of Duty series to feature branching storyline.
Ever evolving video gaming industry has surpassed every other mode of entertainment in the recent past. In 1947 the first ever video game was created using Cathode Ray tube. Since then the technology has evolved tremendously. Although stereoscopic 3D gaming is not very popular but it is catching up and in the coming time it is expected to become more prevalent. Augmented reality is another avenue which the gaming industry is exploring and in a not so distant future we can expect to see it making inroads into our homes.
