Promoting is Different Now
My husband Ross, and I have run several businesses both offline and online. When we opened our music school in Florida, in 1996, promoting was all about Yellow Pages advertising. We spent hundreds of dollars a month in Yellow Pages ads. When was the last time you looked up something in the Yellow Pages? Ours go directly to the recycling bin.
Next, everybody got a do it yourself static website. That was about 2005. We learned that the most important words to have on your site were “print this page.” We used our websites in conjunction with newspaper “advertorials”…ads that were written to look like newspaper articles. With newspapers dying by the thousands, things had to change again.
Promoting is Now Cheaper But Takes More Skill
Now we don’t have to pay a monthly Yellow Pages bill but we do need to have some promoting skills. We need to learn how to use social media, blogging, SEO and other new skills. Things are changing so fast. Just last year, was anybody even aware of Pinterest?
