If you’re searching around trying to find out what causes over processed hair, you’ve come to the right place!
Trying to keep your hair looking fabulous can come at a high price and some women over-process their hair for the look of perfection.
Having over processed hair can be very uneasy… hair tends to be dry, brittle and just plain break off.
So What Causes Over Processed Hair?
DIY (do it yourself)
One the of the most popular contributing factors to over processed hair is do it yourself at-home relaxers, perms and hair colors.
See, nowadays more and more women are doing their own hair because of the economy… they think they can’t get great hair care because of inflation (an increase of prices). The one thing they don’t realize is that doing their hair themselves does more harm than good.

When you relax, perm or color your hair at home, you greatly risk the possibility of over processing due to:
- Processing the hair too long
- Applying chemical process incorrectly such as overlapping the chemical onto already processed hair
- Applying chemical on already damaged hair
- Frequent application of chemicals
- Not having a regime or plan for after the processing
- Not reading or following the instructions
Double Processing
Another culprit of over processed hair is double-processing. This is when you not only have a relaxer, which breaks the hair bonds and leaves the hair more prone to damage, but to also color the hair with chemical hair coloring and even worse, lifting (lightening) the hair color by use of peroxide and ammonia-based colors.
This is primarily the reason that at Picture Perfect Hair by Maiysha, NO chemical services are offered – not even coloring… the hair color I use is natural, vegetable-based with no harsh chemicals!
Now that you know what causes over processed hair you can make better choices and decisions when doing your hair as well as choosing a stylist; and having a stylist that actually cares about you and your hair is the key to the health of your hair!
Peace!
