Tension alopecia affects many women all over the world, but…
…it is something that can be avoided when you know what steps to take.
Tension alopecia, also known as “traction alopecia“, happens when strain has been placed on the hair shaft with either pulling he hair or by putting tension on the hair.
Here are some of the main causes of tension alopecia:
Hair braids and cornrows put a lot of tension on hair because the hair is being pulled and tension is being applied…not to mention the tightness. As you can see in the picture below, the tension placed on and around the edges of the hairline has caused tension alopecia.
Chemicals are another cause of tension alopecia. The harshness of relaxers, perms and colors can cause severe damage by weakening the hair and causing it to fall out.

Wearing ponytails is a very elusive way to get tension alopecia, because it happens slowly over time and normally women who wear ponytails a lot don’t realize it’s happening until it’s too late. Wearing your hair in a ponytail constantly puts a lot of strain on the hair and tension on the hair shaft.
Is Tension Alopecia Reversible?
Now that you have the information you need about tension alopecia, make sure you use it so you’re not faced with permanent hair loss. Sometimes your hair can grow back and sometimes it can’t.
If your having problems with hair loss due to tension…
STOP whatever it is you’re doing immediately!
Be sure to massage affected area with a natural growth serum daily. Hair grows from the scalp and if the scalp is stimulated hair can re-grow, but in the case where hair can’t regrow a hair transplant may be needed.
Keep the stress and strain off of your hair as much as possible, be gentle with your hair and find out from your doctor if your case is hereditary or health/medication related.
