YouTube SEO Optimization

Here are some YouTube SEO tips and best practices to help your videos rank better.

YouTube SEO Best Practices and Checklist

Here is a YouTube SEO checklist that you can use to improve your on page YouTube SEO optimization. This will make it easier for you to rank in Google, and within YouTube itself.

1) Speak Your Target Keyword within Your Video a Few Times

YouTube has the ability to transcribe the videos that you upload, and they will transcribe your video, so you want to actually speak your chosen keyword a couple of times in your video.

2) Name Your Video File the Keyword

Whatever keyword you have chosen, name your video file that keyword with dashes. For example, if your keyword is lead generation, then name your video lead-generation. Save your video with that name, and then upload it to YouTube.

3) Include the Keyword in Your Title

Above the description, you can give your video a title. Make sure you make your keyword part of that title.

4) Create a Keyword Rich Description

Write out a description below your video, and make sure that your keyword is sprinkled throughout that description. The description doesn’t necessarily have to be about the video, it can be on something related. The idea here is to get your keyword into your description a couple of times.

Using related keywords within your description is also a good idea. You can just use the keywords that you add into your video’s tags.

5) Create a 300 to 800 Word Description

You should create a description that is between 300 to 800 words in length. I know, that’s a big gap; but typically the longer the description the better.

6) Link to Your Google Plus Account

At the end of your description, add in the URL to your Google Plus account. Why should you do this? Well, Google owns YouTube, and Google loves Google. Google is going to like seeing that link in your YouTube description, and that is going to play in your favor when it comes to YouTube SEO.

YouTube SEO

If you don’t have a Google Plus account, you should go set one up today and start using it. I’ve got some Google Plus training here that will show you how to build out your Google Plus network, and how you can utilize Google Plus to show up on the first page of Google when someone does a search for one of your keywords.

7) Include the Video’s URL in Your Description

After you publish your YouTube video, go grab the URL for that same video and place that URL at the end of your description. You’re doing this because it falls under the same idea as step 6, Google likes to see you linking back to their stuff; and YouTube is their video search engine platform.

8) Include Your Keyword and Related Keywords in the Tags

Tags are basically keywords, and while you are editing your video you’ll find the Tags section below the description. Add in your primary keyword, along with some related keywords. I like to include anywhere between 5 to 8 keywords in the Tags, but I always aim to have at least 5 keywords.

9) Allow Comments

With each YouTube video, you have the choice to either allow comments or disable commenting. It helps if you allow people to comment, and as people begin to comment on your videos; you should reply to their comments. If you can’t reply to all of them, at least reply to some of them.

This is increasing the social interaction on your video, and it lets people know that you are engaged.

10) Pick an Appropriate Category

This one is pretty straightforward, just pick a category for your video that makes sense.

YouTube SEO – Some Final Tips

Here are some final tips for you that don’t really improve your YouTube SEO, but they can help drive more visitors to your blog posts, capture pages, etc.

YouTube SEO

Remember I said it is rare that someone will read your description below your video? That’s why I like to include a link to either my blog or one of my capture pages at the very top of the description. Doing this will make that link visible under your video without having to click on the show more button.

Having said that, I still like to sometimes include a call-to-action at the end of my description for anyone who does happen to read the entire description. I mean, you never know, so why not be prepared if that happens?

Speaking of a call-to-action, its also a great idea to include a call-to-action within your video. I usually like to include mine at the very end of my video.

What is a call-to-action? Well, its basically asking a person to take a certain action. For example, at the end of your video you can ask them to subscribe to your YouTube channel, visit your blog, join your team, check out a product you are selling, etc.

Whatever it is you want them to do, and makes sense for that particular video. You wouldn’t want to be talking about losing weight in a video, and then ask them to go check out your blog that is all about high calorie desserts, right? Of course not. It would make more sense in this case to ask them to check out your blog that is all about exercises and workouts designed to help people lose weight and to be healthier.

Off-Page Optimization

Alright, so above I’ve shown you the YouTube SEO best practices for getting your video SEO optimized. After you’ve done that, you should then focus on off-page optimization. Off-page optimization is important to getting your videos to rank better, and higher on Google and the other major search engines.

For off-page optimization training I recommend Predatory SEO.
