I got slapped in the face by my own words.

Restored from the Empower Network archive (2011–2017), lightly edited to meet our current advertising standards. Views are the original author’s.

Holy cow.  Have you ever been talking to some one, giving all kinds of advice… telling them what they need to do to improve and really wanting them to listen and take action?

I recently had a conversation like that. I was both giving advice and agreeing with this person that someone else needed to do it. The advice was to stop being selfish and thinking only about themselves.

So, we were talking along, going on and on about how this friend of ours is being self centered and only thinking about themselves, expecting others around them to change. Im sure you have one, 2 or maybe more friends like that don’t you?

Man, I was on a roll, giving advice, quoting motivational quotes, telling my friend what this person needs to do to change and become ‘self aware’ and then our call ended.

Now I’ve been working on becoming a different person and I’ve been challenged with changing my thinking from self limiting beliefs to ones of strength, being empowered and self confident.

I have no reason not to be, I just am not where I want to be…YET!

So, we are talking along and I’m telling my friend
“yeah, they just need to stop and listen to more than what they want”

and

“If they would just stop and take a step back, they’d see that their way isn’t the only way”

and

“The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result”

I was on fire with quotes and feedback.

and the we hung up.

I carried on my way for another 20 minutes, then right in the middle of a hardware store I almost broke into tears.

That whole conversation… that whole set of feedback… all those words that I spoke just came back and slapped me in the face.

Ouch.

I was really giving myself feedback. I’m doing all this crap too.

I’m stuck in a rut and doing the same thing over and over and expecting something to change, my environment to change and everyone around me to change, when the issue is right in front of me. Actually, it’s right on top of me. and actually it’s inside me.

It was an a-ha moment that I’ll never forget. I immediately got out my phone and sent a text to my friend and told them ‘thank you.’

I had realized that all my advice was not directed at my friend or about them but it was all directed to me. That was why we were in that conversation…..It had nothing to do with the person we were talking about. It was all about what I need to change, do and become.

SLAP! OUCH!!

Here’s a video I made immediately after I realized what happened:

Today, I’m watching what I say! I’m giving myself good advice, positive self talk and taking the words from my inner circle audios and putting good things in my head.

All the bad crap that’s filling that space needs to be pushed out and replaced with good, positive and motivational thoughts and words.

I’m done being a victim and I’m taking over my thoughts….
