Make sure to keep your spices and herbs sealed in airtight containers, protected in a dark, cool place. Light, heat, and humidity will cause their flavor to weaken. When stored correctly, your spices can stay spicy for up to a year. Spices that are kept whole can keep their flavor for about three, four or five years. If you keep these properly stored, they can sometimes stay fresh for an even longer period of time.
Finish your prep work in advance. You’ll be glad you have your prep work done when it’s time to cook. However, when you are ready to start cooking and have a deadline for when your meal needs to be finished, it can be a bit stressful. Do the prep work as early as you can to avoid stress later.
If you are just starting out with cooking, consider doing your research at your local library. There are plenty of cookbooks with simple recipes available. Experiment with several recipes, and give yourself the time in perfecting your cooking skills.
Being properly prepared is key to success in cooking for your family and friends. Make sure that you have all of the ingredients available. Store your spices in a cool, dark place. By storing them in excessive light and heat, their shelf life will decrease. Always keep your spices in a dark and cool location to extend their longevity. Your culinary preparations will taste better if your spices are fresh.
To make it easier for you to slice meat into thin strips, you should partially freeze it. This is great for various Oriental meals, such as Thai or Chinese dishes. Partially frozen meat is easier to slice as the cold temperature prevents the meat fibers from stretching and tearing. However, be sure to allow the meat strips to thaw before cooking them, for even cooking.
Tough Root Vegetable
A sharp knife is indispensable for efficient cooking. Dull knives make it harder to cut and are more dangerous to use. Attempting to force a blunt blade through a tough root vegetable is much more likely to lead to an accident, than quickly dicing and slicing the same tough root vegetable with a sharp blade.
Cooking veggies improves the quality of them. If you slow cook vegetables they will lose nutritional value and taste. The quick cook methods generally make the vegetables tastier and more nutritional. Adapting the principle of faster cooking times is a crucial element in serving better quality vegetables to your family and friends.
They will act like a sponge and just soak up a lot of that water. Use a clean cloth to wipe them off.
Add the seasonings a little at a time throughout the cooking process. If you season your food this way, you can bring out the flavors of your ingredients a lot better.
Always properly measure cooking oil. This will help you lower the fat in your foods while cooking. This will enable you to keep track of the amount of oil you are using.
Try drying your own fresh tomatoes. Simply cut them into 1/2 half inch slices, or cut lengthwise for Romas. Place cut side up on a clean cooling rack and salt lightly. Set the rack on a cookie sheet in an oven at 190 degrees for a 10 hours. Place them in the freezer in plastic bags. Dried tomatoes may also be stored in a jar containing fresh herbs and olive oil. Place this in the refrigerator and be sure to use it within 2 weeks.
Many vegetables and herbs emit aromas that remain in the cutting board, regardless of how many times you clean it. Make a small mark with a marker on one side of your board to remind you which side is for sweet items and which is for sour.
