Vets & Pets And other Bali Animals

Apparently, Tigers, Black Panthers or Leapards can still be found in Bali.. but are pretty rare.

Bali Animals: Bali is teaming with animals … from the above large carnivore mammals to the now domestic Water Buffalo, Monkeys,  street Dogs, Cats,  Java Munia, Sparrows, Parrot finch and Herons +  huge array of snakes spiders,  lizards etc etc…

The MOST commonly seen Bali Animals are the street Dogs, Street Cats,  the bird species .. and of course the Human Animals. J

Of course in the Bali Zoo you can see huge elephants and all the major “ZOO” animals… but let’s talk about  the  poor  Bali Street Dog for a moment.

Bali Animals – Dog in Pain

The following is a true encounter I had with an unusual street dog sometimes called a “Warung Dog” since they normally attach themselves to a local Warung where they can pick up food scraps.

This particular Dog was NOT the normal pure Bali Dog. that you see. This one  was a mix of a  Chihuahua Domestic Dog and a Bali Street dog, a beautiful looking dog.

A friend and I were walking along Jl merta Nadi (nr the jail) when my friend (animal lover) spotted this dog lying on the pavement… and noticed that the dog was in pain.

How she knew this I have no idea.. she has this  thing with animals.. a kind of telepathy maybe..

Anyway, sure enough on inspection the dog had what looked like an open wound at its rear end and was not comfortable moving around and mainly stayed lying down.

My friend immediately delved into her bag and came up with a BAWA brochure.

BAWA – Bali Animals  Welfare Association

The main office of BAWA is in Ubud and my friend had been in the BAWA office the  previous week and they advised her that if she found sick or hurt animals on the street, especially Dogs to CALL the BAWA office immediately and they would send one of the animal  ambulances to pick up the Dog.

The ambulance at this particular time didn’t seem to be available.

So I then called my friend Dr. Matt Homfray who runs VET InterNational in Kuta to see if he could help.

Matt was extremely concerned but asked  us to first please  try to get the BAWA ambulance since they have donations paying for this service. He also kindly offered his help, if the BAWA ambulance did not respond within the hour.

1 hour went by and no sign of the BAWA ambulance.. so after another phone call to Matt he offered to send his .. 10 minutes later the Blue Ambulance turned up.The dog was expertly placed in a small cage and transported back to Vet International Hospital.

I learned later that the dog had vaginal cancer but should respond well with Chemo… so we had probably saved that dog’s life.. at least saved him from a lot of pain and suffering. Thanks Matt.

 For Bali Animals in Need

Many street dogs become injured or sick and suffer terribly.. so if you see one in trouble please call BAWA… they are funded with donations for this particular work and are ready and willing  to pick up any animal in trouble (except the human kind)
