So, what do the Brits have that you don’t? It’s an internet and radio service that is actually software to give you the real scoop out of the BBC.

Making the Change from the Real Player to the BBC iPlayer

To understand why the BBC TV made the change from the Real Player to the BBC iPlayer, you need to understand the nature of streaming video.

Watching streaming video can be frustrating especially if it buffers constantly. This can ruin the enjoyment of watching music videos, and has even impacted gamers that are using certain applications on their computer.

As technology advances, so does BBC TV by implementing this internet and radio based software. The change was made back in December of 2007, after it ran on a beta program.

In 2008, they decided to change the look of the iPlayer to give it more visual appeal to users.

As always looks aren’t everything, unless of course you are looking at the BBC iPlayer!

BBC TV Markets the BBC iPlayer to be Unmissable!

To market a new product like this for viewing enjoyment was instrumental in the craze of watching TV online was simple. Simply add a tag line that people can relate too in a busy world and it goes flying out the door.

The first tagline was this: “Catch up on the last 7 days of BBC TV and Radio”, so what was the problem? It leads viewers to believe that they would only be able to get those 7 days and nothing more.

To propel the BBC iPlayer into a higher level of interest they changed the slogan.
The new slogan simply stated, “Making the Unmissable, Unmissable”. Genius? Yes, it is, and it still has people giving the BBC iPlayer a look even if they don’t live in the BBC.

In May 2010, BBC TV decided that it was time to take it yet again to another level by giving it a “social makeover”.

BBC iPlayer Shacks Up with Other Programmers

If you understand how getting visibility online works these days will understand that it was in fact essential for the BBC iPlayer to link to other programs online.

These links from other broadcasters helped to not only build a relationship with them, but it was also designed to create connections for viewers that are relevant.

When users were at the site for BBC iPlayer they could search these links, helping them find other programs that were relevant to what they were listening too. This was designed to also give viewers a chance to piece together any missing pieces of the puzzle.
