An Idea that has Liberated Me in My Life

Restored from the Empower Network archive (2011–2017), lightly edited to meet our current advertising standards. Views are the original author’s.

What do you believe that you are capable of doing? Are there things that you think that you are not able to do?

I also used to think that. I thought that other people could be successful but that I couldn’t. I thought that other people could have a successful relationship but not me. There were many things I thought that since I wasn’t good at them, I would never be good at them.

A few  years ago, I took a course in NLP, Neuro Linguistic Programming. It is a way of thinking that changes the way you think about life and about your past. They have a list of basic assumptions that changed the way I looked at the world and myself.

One of them was that:

If it is possible in the world, it is possible for anyone. It is only a question of how

For everyone some things come easier than others. But we often mistakenly think that if something does not come easy, we will never be able to do it. In reality, we have an unlimited ability to do whatever we decide we want to do and that we are willing to put in enough time and effort. That is the how.

I sing off key. I thought I couldn’t learn to sing. One time a friend convinced me to come to a singing class with him and the director tested me. Most of the time I was off key. But a few times I sang correctly. He said that if I can sing correctly part of the time, I can train my hearing and my voice to sing right all the time. I would have to work at it in order to get to a level that some people come by naturally, but if I was willing to make the effort, I could do it.

I decided that at that point in my life, I wanted to put my effort into other things, but the idea that I could learn to sing correctly if I wanted to was liberating.

I still sing off key, but I have accomplished other things I didn’t think were possible.  I didn’t think I was good at writing and I am now writing blogs. You can be a judge if I can write or not.  But I feel the posts are getting easier to write when I do it consistantly.

Some things are too much effort for the results for a certain person or at a certain time in a person’s life. You need to want to do something and be willing to put in the time and effort to accomplish anything. But the idea that you can accomplish it is something that many people don’t realize or believe.

This idea has been reinforced thru other learning I have done in other places. I may have even heard it before I learned NLP, but the way it was presented there so simply, make an impression on me.
