My Perfect Day…

Restored from the Empower Network archive (2011–2017), lightly edited to meet our current advertising standards. Views are the original author’s.

I’ve been living and working on a 50m private super yacht since March 2009. The yacht was built back in 1999 so she’s travelled! Over the past 4 years we’ve been traveling between Puerto Vallarta, Mexico and Sausalito, California we’d typically we would be docked in a marina for around 5 months in each place so we really got to know our surroundings. The owners would occasionally come visit and use their yacht but for the most part my husband and I are just 2 of the 9 permanent crew that maintain this girl day in day out! More on how this is done on an upcoming post!

Some of you are probably thinking this sounds like a perfect life already, cruising around, sipping Margaritas in Mexico and Chardonnays in California etc… and i’m doing it with Nick. It certainly has it’s perks, Don’t get me wrong we’ve had days that were pretty perfect and  i’m so unbelievably grateful for this opportunity getting our lives back on track after the huge debt we faced before joining this Industry.

This lifestyle I would say is definitely a step in the right direction away from the day to day rat race that so many of us get caught up in, spending our whole lives working just so we can enjoy the weekends and holiday or two but it isn’t without it’s sacrifices.

I have to say the yacht we work on is rare, most yachts are much more active, they travel more and often have very little time before the next lot of guests arrive. Guests pay ridiculous amounts of money for a piece of this glamorous lifestyle and we are here to make every minute of their time on board effortless and memorable. We make it happen.

I promise I will get into the real secrets of what life is like for crew in the yachting industry in another post but for now i’ll just leave you with this… We see things you don’t wanna see and get paid for it!

We sacrifice time with family and friends, missing out on our niece and nephews special milestones growing up and just having a presence in their lives. Your crew have to fill so many rolls, colleagues, family, friends etc… Cooped up on a yacht yet what if you don’t get along… It’s difficult yet we stick with it for the money, for life we al envision for our futures.

A year ago I had to take some time out to figure out the direction I wanted my life to go in. To be honest I was just drifting. I cleared my head and created a list, we had just bought a house in Plett at this time that we were paying off over the next 2 years. I started to get depressed thinking that the things I wanted to do would have to wait until we paid off the house… 2 years! Although the house was what I wanted I felt trapped into staying in a job that gave me very little mental stimulation, now it’s paid off  it’s time to focus on the next step.

As in my previous post you read about the vision board I made, Well I’m making another and this will give you an idea of what it’s going to look like…

My perfect Day… (everyday)

Waking up to the sound of the ocean knowing that my day is going to be filled with whatever I want, creating and spending time with family making memories, creating an environment that friends and family want to be in, creating amazing food and an amazing life for myself and al those around me.

That sounds nice but how am I going to do that you ask… Well it won’t be another 5 years working on a yacht thats for sure!

Check out just how i’m going to do it and more importantly just how you can do it too.
