At one time, I bet you have damaged your smartphone!

by: Scott Johnson

There’s no getting around it: in today’s connected world having a working smartphone is a must for most people. Indeed, these devices do make the trials and tribulations of every day life that much easier. But there are untold, seemingly harmless dangers out there – from water to keys – that can damage both he look and function of modern smartphones. Unfortunately, most smartphone users fall victim to these accidents every once in a while.

Water damage, crashing apps, scratches – the list goes on and on. The good news is that for most of the problems that can afflict a smartphone, there are usually a number of inexpensive – even household – remedies in which to fix them. With that in mind, here is a list of some of the more common smartphone issues and the ways to clear them up.

Water damage- act fast to save your smartphone!

This is a fairly common occurrence — and one that will often render a smartphone unusable. But those who act fast in the event their mobile device is accidentally submerged in water stand a decent chance of saving it. First and foremost, it is vital not to turn the phone on after it has gotten wet. Instead, remove the battery immediately and dry both it and the phone with a towel. Then bury both the phone and battery in a bowl of dry rice overnight, as this will help draw out the remaining moisture.

One alternative to this method is to dry the battery and phone by placing them over the vents on a television or by placing the handheld in front of an air conditioner.

Screen scratches

This is a cosmetic problem, but a serious one nonetheless. Screen scratches can be avoided entirely with the use of a good display protector, but those who are already in trouble may want to consider toothpaste as a cheap and easy solution. Simply apply a dollop of toothpaste (regular, not the kind with any whitening agent) to a cotton swab and rub it into the damaged area of the screen in a circular motion. Leave for a few minutes, as it will give the toothpaste time to work into the scratch, then wipe away with a damp (not wet) microfiber cloth.

Fast-draining batteries

The bane of the smartphone owner: poor battery life. Often this is the result or running too many applications at once or by keeping power-draining features, such as Bluetooth enabled. To fix this problem, cut back on the apps and disable the features. It’s especially important to disable as many location-based applications as possible, as the constant use of GPS is a big drain on a smartphone.

If none of the above are the issue, the problem is likely the result of overheating. To combat this problem, smartphone owners can wrap the battery in a zip lock bag and keep them in the refrigerator.

Frozen pixels

Another cosmetic problem, but one that can make the average smartphone owner feel as if he or she has a defective device. The best way to fix these dead pixels is by gentling massaging the area around them with a microfiber cloth. This will reinvigorate the damaged pixels and allow them to gain some of their color back.

The above tips should prove helpful with fixing minor and commonplace smartphone issues. If the above tricks are not effective, it may be time to think about professional service or total replacement.
