Nutritional Facts Labels: Do We Really Need Them?

Nutritional Facts Labels are a relatively new trend when it comes to understanding nutrition.
But do you really understand what it all means.
Okay, you may understand the calorie count and for years the trend has been “low fat”, so you may think that you know to stay away from high fat food. But what about the other things on the label? And have you read the actual ingredients?
Nutritional Facts Labels were started in the US in the 1990 by the Food and Drug Administration. By 1994 food companies were required to have these labels on their products. So of the information has changed over time, but the main idea was to give consumers better information on what they were eating.
The unfortunate thing about these labels is that you need to really understand how to read them before they can be of use. Most people are aware of a few parts but something that is left out of these labels is the preservatives that they put into these products to keep them stable on the shelves.
Here is one of these labels. Now who knows how much of each ingredient that they list is required per day. I certainly don’t have that information on the tip of my tongue and I have a Bachlor Degree in Nutrition. I don’t even think a PhD would know all that information when they are traveling through the grocery store.
And let’s say we all understood these labels. We would have to have a calculator with use at all times to calculate if we are getting enough of the right nutritionn in every meal. What a hassle!
So do we really need these labels? I say no! For one, few know how to read them. Even fewer know how to implement them into their meals. Due to the cost that food manufacturers have to spend to comply with the FDA regulation, our cost of these products has just skyrocketed.
When it comes to your nutrition I have a very easy way to eat. You don’t have to know how to read Nutritional Facts labels. You won’t need a Bachelors or a PhD. All you will have to do is eat foods that don’t have labels. Vegetables and meats don’t have labels because the don’t have anything bad in them. That is a much better way to eat.
So the next time you go to the grocery store, just stay away from any Nutritional Facts Labels. It’s better for your nutrition.
