A Critical Lion Server Review

This Lion Server Review will expose the good, the bad and the ugly about Lion Server.

If you have not yet gotten a chance to use this software, I strongly recommend reading about some of the issues it has been having.

Obviously, for the workplace, it is mandatory for everything to work as smooth as possible.

So what are some of the problems with Lion Server? First, Lets start with the “Good”.

The good thing about this version of Apple’s server is that its updated. Which means more features and tools.

One thing that was added, to ALL Lion software, was Mission control. Cool little app to quickly be able to access applications.

It looks just like a Ipad except its on a desktop. Aside from that, I can think of too many things to say.

Now, to the part that I did think I would have to get into. As you have seen in this Lion Server Review so far, the only cool thing about this software is the new apps they put in.

But what about the apps they put in that just doesn’t work? Where can we put those without hurting apple’s feelings?

You can’t. I work in a mixed environment with a Mac Mini Server running OSX Lion Server.

We are currently transitioning from PCs and Macs to just Macs. One thing that has been changed and causes a ton of issues is the SMB protocol.

Once a glamorous attraction in Snow Leopard Server, SMB has become crap in OS X Lion Server.

Apparently Apple decided to use their very own SMB and it causes all other devices to crap out when attempting to use it.

Its not all devices that have problems. Its just a few devices like a Ricoh copier that uses SMB to scan to a computer.

Every single time it is attempted it fails. It makes a connection to the server but whenever a document is attempted to scan a transmission error occurs.

Note, that issue was just on SMB. As you have seen so far above in this Lion Server Review is that there aren’t many good things and you just so the “bad” of this software.

Now, lets get to the “ugly”. WebDav is a very cool feature. To able to connect IWorks from IOS devices to save directly to the server is a great feature.

However, its a little buggy. I remember that I had WebDav working perfect with teachers having access to a common folder, as well as students.

But the problem was that every time users were added, it began to give weird errors that did not describe anything.

It just said, “Contact your system administrator”. What the hell is that? So one thing that was very disappointing was the fact that you had this great feature and you could not use it effectively.

My hope is that Mountain Lion Server will solve all of these issues.
