How a smile and a laugh can make your day
You may have heard “a smile is contagious” and “laughter is the best medicine”, but are these statements true? Have you ever had a frustrating day (silly me we all have had this kind of day!) and your face shows it? Have you found yourself walking or stalking around, pissed off at everything? Then BOOM! A friend shows up, shares a joke or even just smiles, and it changes your whole perspective and you start smiling and laughing! You are probably thinking how such a simple concept like laughing can change your day. There are a lot of studies that have been done on the effects of smiling and laughter and what they can do to the human body and it’s moods. Let happiness be our end goal and lets use smiles and laughter as stepping stones for achieving our goal.
Smiling
We all recognize that not all smile are genuine nor are they all results of happiness. Some people smile when receiving bad news, and others use smiling as a form of manipulation, but our probably know that smiles from positive interaction differ from other smiles. When you are smiling from a happy place, you smile wide and show teeth. When you smile from a not so happy place, it’s forced and closed. As humans, we are social beings surrounded by other social beings. We pass many of these people on the street everyday or we are introduced to them briefly. A smile says “hello” and “I am a friend”.
Laughter
Even better for your mind and body is laughter. If you laugh when your down, it’s very therapeutic. Laughter releases endorphins, which are hormones that make you feel good. A smile and laughter are contagious. How many times have you heard someone in fully belly laugh mode and you yourself could not help laughing or at least smile?
Happiness
Research has shown that people who are unhappy are more at risk for heart disease than those who consider themselves happy. To consider being happy does not mean you do not have bad days, we all do, but that you can bounce back quickly from a bad day. Those who have a more positive outlook on like are less likely to become sick and if they do they have less symptoms of that sickness. So thinking positive is essential to your well being. It’s amazing to think that our minds and bodies can keep themselves happy and healthy when we make the effort to do so. A positive mind set can go a long way to improving quality of life. So smile and laugh! If you can do both of these things, you are headed in the right direction. Have a blessed day!
