Search Engine Ranking, How It Works

Search engine ranking is crucial to internet marketing success.
I just reviewed a course entitled, “IMTutor”. I purchased the course before I joined the Empower Network (EN), and I refuse to let it just site there. So far, it’s very informative and adds a different perspective to some of the information I learn in EN. In this post, I will talk about what the course covered in the first two videos of the first module about internet marketing basics in search engine ranking. So, let’s talk about spiders.
The technical aspects of how search engine ranking works
The search engines (SEs) send out spiders to crawl webpages. These spiders allow the search engines to build huge indexes where all this content is stored. The search engines then need to determine the relevancy and rankings by reviewing the content on these pages for search engine ranking.
Each webpage has the ability to rank on the search engines. Right now, it is estimated that there are 30 to 50 billion webpages on the internet.
Here’s how the spiders crawl your website or blog for search engine ranking:
1. They go to each webpage and look at all the content on it.
2. They analyze all the keywords and look at all the inbound and outbound linking.
3. The spiders follow the links and go to pages within your website or externally.
How information from the spiders helps search engine ranking
The process of search engine ranking involves the SEs looking at all these factors in determining whether to index the content and how to display it in search results.
They use this information to determine where to place each of your webpages when people search. They look at the relevancy of every page, the overall authority of the site, who is linking to the page, and the number of backlinks. Keyword density also counts, but evidently not as much as it used to count before people started stuffing their content with keywords. However, you still have to incorporate keywords in your content for the page to rank for that term.
The search engines also look at how often new content is created on the website.
How to increase the frequency of spiders crawling your site for improved search engine ranking
So, in this instance, you actually want to attract spiders by:
1. Updating your content regularly. When you start a new website, it is best to post daily for 90 days and continue posting regularly after that. Whenever you add new content, this signals the search engines to send spiders to your site. They will know to keep coming back when you update regularly.
2. The older your website, the more likely that the spiders will visit. Established websites, say 5 to 10 years old, are likely visited more often than brand new websites.
3. Get backlinks from credible websites, like web 2.0 social media sites and authority sites. If you have backlinks coming from sites that the spiders crawl regularly, they will find your site that way. The more backlinks you have, the more likely they will find your webpage. Remember, there are anywhere from 30 to 50 billion webpages out there.
One of the best linking strategies is to get backlinks from sites that get crawled everyday.
Typically, new websites get indexed within 3 weeks if none of the above strategies are implemented.
How site architecture impacts search engine ranking
One of the more important, and often overlooked, aspects of good search engine optimization is good site architecture. Well, what does that mean?
It’s how your site is organized. Determine what the overall site will be about, what will your categories or services be about. What will the webpages be about.
Site architecture is important because:
1. It allows for easy site crawling for spiders.
2. It makes it easy for visitors to find the content they are looking for.
3. It makes it easier to add new pages into the different categories.
Every new page should be devoted to a core service, and this will make it easier to rank using keyword optimization.
Tips to properly structure your website:
1. Optimize only 1 (maximum of 2) keywords per page, especially if you are in a competitive niche.
2. Be sure you follow basic on page optimization rules…
–Keyword in title tag (H1)
–Keyword in H2 and H3 tag (subtitles)
–Keyword in 1st and last paragraph
–Keyword density of 1% (maximum of 3%)
3. Utilize keyword variations like for search engine ranking, also use ranking on search engines as a variation.
4. Have good internal linking structure and link to other pages on website. This is called deep linking.
5. Use short and descriptive URLs. This makes it easier for the search engines and looks cleaner to the site visitor.
You should take some time to draw out your site structure. Think of how your visitor will engage in your website.
