Taking whey protein before bed may not be the optimal time for maximal effect of this supplement; however, it nonetheless supplies your muscles with the amino acids needed for growth. Although nutrient timing matters for optimal fitness, the quality of your nutrition is also critical to meeting your fitness goals. In other words, consuming high-quality protein such as whey is essential for building muscle, no matter what time of day you take it.

Taking whey protein before bed allows your resting body to rapidly benefit from the amino acids it contains. Whey protein, because it comes from an animal, contains all the essential amino acids you need to include in your daily diet, especially when you are building muscle. The branched-chain amino acids leucine, isoleucine and valine get incorporated into your muscle tissue particularly quickly, as they do not require metabolism by your liver, unlike non-branched-chain amino acids. Because your body repairs and builds muscle tissue during periods of rest, consuming whey protein before you go to bed supplies your recovering muscles with amino acids at that time.

An article suggested taking protein before bed so your body is fully nourished during sleep. I’m concerned that this habit may make me put on fat I think eating late is suppose to be harmful or something? I sleep at 11 pm and stop eating usually at around 9-10pm. I’m 184lbs 5’11 and I’ve been on SS for close to a year now, I’m looking to bulk up 20 more pounds.

You have probably heard a lot about Casein in the area of fitness (mainly bodybuilding). Casein is 80% milk protein, which you would get from milk, yogurt, and cheese. The supplement form of Casein that comes in a powder is ideal for a night time snack. Protein shakes in general are easy on the stomach as long as you are not sensitive to certain things. (Casein is high in lactose, so it may not be for some people). Overall though Casein is the best source of protein before bed because of it’s ultra-slow absorption rate. It generally take 6 to 7 hours for a Casein Protein Shake to fully absorb and be all used up by the muscles, giving them a sparring supply of protein and amino acids for recovery and feel better the morning after.

Getting Extra Protein for Bodybuilding

When choosing how you are going to increase your intake of protein it is best to think outside of the box and not to think in terms of eating just a single source of protein. By getting different forms of protein throughout the day it is possible to ensure that you get all 27 amino acids (which aren’t even available from most protein shakes) and to spread your costs. Timing these correctly can also help you to make the most from each different protein source. As a suggestion then, try having eggs first thing in the morning (raw or otherwise), chicken or tuna at lunch, a whey protein after workouts and a casein protein before bed. This will give you the best combination of proteins throughout the day.
